No longer on the river and, again, an empty nester. Back to living on Fleming Island and making some more friends!

Manitowoc on the national news!

I was so excited right off the bat this morning.......while lounging in bed, reading my Grandma book and watching Fox and Friends, they started the segment called "News by the Numbers". All the stories start with a number, today's first number being $338,000,000 for some ridiculous expenditure on the government level. The next number was 22, the age of one of the youngest mayors in the nation, elected Tuesday in none other than Manitowoc, Wisconsin!!!! I did not even see the next stories as I hurriedly grabbed my phone to call Linda J. who was certainly watching F & F at the same time. While the phone rang, I ran out to the family room to tell Joanne about it, and a very tired Tommy answered in Manitowoc. I woke him up! I'd dialed the home phone instead of the cell number for Linda so I told him the exciting news, although my excitement exceeded his at the moment. As I talked to him, I had a call waiting, and it was Linda, calling me on her cell phone. Bye, Tommy, go back to sleep!!!
*
Talk about great minds thinking the same way! Linda and I chatted about the very close election, only apart by 15 votes but no recount expected as the election has been certified already. Wow! The young man who won, Justin Nickles, still lives at home with his parents but truly has a head for leadership and politics, supposedly his lifelong goal is to be president some day. He is following another strong leader serving our fair city and hopefully will be able to overcome the short-sightedness with which many in my home town are plagued.
*
Linda told me she heard a funny quote the other day that made her think of me, how good friends are like Chinese food: something about always being available, some thing some thing, and only a phone call away! Which certainly proved to be the case this morning!

Wrapping up the day

Joanne and her family are enjoying the reflecting moon on the river, relaxing after having a wonderful dinner at The Club tonight. They spent the better part of the day in St. Augustine at the Alligator Farm, those crazy bird watchers! What is it with this family and their animal passions??? I never knew anyone who was so into birds and horses and cats and other creatures like they are! Although I was nicely invited to join the fun, I respectfully declined due to the fact that it was only in the 50's outside, not fit for man nor beast nor Kim to be walking around, looking at birds. And certainly NOT for watching the animal handlers feeding dead rats to alligators, thank you very much!
*
The first thing I saw this a.m. was Joanne strolling the house with a blanket draped around her as she was freezing cold. Not only were the outdoor temps low overnight, but she slept on the air bed in the guest room which tends to feel quite cold when slept on. Linda did not mention it when she was here but Joanne was chilled through, even though there is a blanket between the mattress and the sheets for insulation. Brrrr!
*
Once the rest of our company awoke and enjoyed some breakfast (Joanne baked biscuits this a.m.) we sat and talked about "The Phantom of the Opera" and Sarah Brightman and cruises we've taken and more Sarah chat. I adore Jo's daughter and grand-daughter, and love sharing my home with them. They were going to have lunch with Joanne's dad at the Home and then head for St. Augustine.
*
Only a few minutes after they left here, my phone rang. It was Kathy B., asking me if I had any lunch plans, needing a "Kim fix".....my favorite type of phone call! We met at Miller's Ale House on Wells Road and had a very nice lunch. She is a salad eater and I had the country fried steak, or at least, half of it! The mashed pots were fake so they were left behind on the plate, no big deal. We'd almost rather talk than eat anyway, but why not do both? She is on spring break this week and trying to pack as much into it as she can, since her daughter is getting married next weekend. Not Easter weekend, the next one.
*
Speaking of needing a fix----one of the phone calls that came during lunch which I let go to the answering machine was from my neighbor, Patti, who was in desparate need of a Diet Coke! If were at home, I would have dashed to her door with one to help her out, but alas, I was out and about. Her hubby is disabled and she could not leave him to get a soda. She was about coffeed-out. Having taken something for her arthritis earlier this a.m., she found herself drowsy and needing a Diet Coke, and she knew just who could fix 'er up----her Coke connection down the promenade! I told her that Maureen, our neighbor on 2nd floor, had given me a can of Diet Coke, the snack size, Sunday night and she said she'd try her next. I hope she scored some Coke before she nodded off while working on her taxes!
*
Another great part of my afternoon, following lunch with Kathy B. and a trip to the cemetery to switch out the bouquets, was to run to Wal*Mart to pick up my chocolate crosses for Easter. Last year I made the mistake of buying them, and then going to lunch and to Hang Ups, leaving the bag of chocolate in the car all that while. They melted and became gooey globs of unrecognizable shapes which did not recover when put in the freezer, and that was NOT going to happen this year! I took them into Great Hang Ups with me so as not to have melted globs again.
*
Another message left during lunch was from Rosalie, in Houston, which I listened to while heading for home. It was such a sweet, lovely message and I decided to save it because it made me feel so wonderful and warm inside. In her message, Rosalie reports that she has been thinking about me so much in recent weeks, because her friend gave her a copy of a CD with the hymn "In Christ Alone" on it. She is blown away by it, having only read about this hymn in my blog but not knowing what I was talking about......until she actually heard it. Blown totally away and thinking about her friend, Kim, way over here in Orange Park!
*
She wanted to be caught up on all the recent news and happenings in my life, as she was well-aware of the Court dates and such. She is quite distressed by the whole thing, not believing the things which have transpired in my life. The last time she was here was for Timmy's funeral and lots has happened since then! Rosalie is the perfect person for building ones' spirits back up and for offering Christian assurances. As Judy R. would say, she is 'such a person'!! Next week she is starting organ lessons again, to help keep her mind nice and sharp, although I cannot imagine hers any other way! Eventually she will learn to play "In Christ Alone" but that is a way down the road. I have no doubt she will concur it!

"In Christ Alone"......

My Daily Burst of Joy

This morning, as I opened the book Linda J. sent me, about daily bursts of joy, April 8th's page was absolutely perfect: There is no better gift we can give another person than the assurance of eternal life in heaven. In a nutshell, a burst of joy!
*
Today is my sister, Jill's, birthday and I am sending her the assurance of eternal life in heaven. That, and a gift card to Applebee's.............shhhh, do not tell her.............

Good news mixed with bad

My sister, Kerry, has been keeping me up-to-date on the strike threat at her place of business in Appleton, WI. She is scared out of her wits about going out on strike when the economy and job situation is so tenuous. The Union reps with whom she speaks and hears in their 'smoking circle' outside seem pretty determined to flex their collective muscles and walk, but hopefully cooler heads will prevail and a satisfactory settlement will be reached. Kerry told me the person who is her rep treats the co-workers like they are idiots, has the attitude of superiority because of her role in the Union. Not having the best interest of those she represents at heart. Remember this the next time the Union elects its officers!
*
Kerry sends me the memos from the Local, some of which I understand and some which I do not, simply because I do not have a contract here to compare the statements. "Item 26" means nothing unless you have it in front of you. One item I cautioned her about the card check provision the Union was trying to achieve and it turned out she had no clue what that was about. After I told her about it, she was glad to know just what was at stake, and this makes me wonder about the rest of her co-workers who might be willing to walk out on their jobs for reasons not totally clear to them. Scary times, in these days of massive unemployment and job losses all around them!
*
The good news is that the employees opted to remain on the job despite having no contract in place, as negotiations continue. Supposedly Kerry has no health insurance since the contract expired and I am not sure how that works once they settle on a deal with the employer. It is not good to have a lapse in coverage in health insurance. I do not like the common misuse of the term "health care" because it is so different from "health insurance". Care is what you get, insurance is how part of it is paid for, two separate issues. Semantics? Perhaps....
*
The markets are down again today so far and ended down at close of trading yesterday. And I was hoping to regain some of my losses in the last six months! Perhaps it is not a trend and we will see some increases yet this week. It had been doing fairly well this past 7 days since the start of the G20 trip. How long can that plane circle??? Today they stopped for a not-so surprising visit to Baghdad before heading back to the USA. On the Fox and Friends show this a.m. a reporter was broadcasting from Istanbul, outside the Blue Mosque and earlier, Hagia Sophia. I was there!!!! First in 2000, and then in 2007!!! I do not regret making that last trip one little bit..........and to have a certain attorney ask me, "Are you still taking those expensive vacations?" INDEED! I get to say what is expensive and what is not! Excuse the rant, please....

I have no clue what this says, but find it simply intriguing. This arch and sign are located inside the Blue Mosque. No flash photography was permitted so not many of my shots turned out. This one did!
This is a view of the Blue Mosque as we drove up on it. Look at the beautiful Agaenan sea behind it.....
*
How can you even begin to put a price on such experiences as these? And what about the wonderful people I have met? Only today I opened an e-mail message from Jim and Beth Humann in the Seattle area, telling me how they attended the funeral service I watched on the Internet yesterday, reporting what a good friend to Evergreen Lutheran High School Curt was. What a small world the WELS finds itself in! Jim and Beth were our hosts for the tour retracing St. Paul's 2nd missionary journey, which we took in July, 2007. It was on this trip I officially became friends with Judy R. which more than pays for my "expensive" vacation!!!

A bit of dirty laundry

Talk about a teaser! Joanne left very early again this a.m. and since came back to retrieve a forgotten bag. The Realtors all must switch their systems to access the MLS, the tool used to list and sell properties industry-wide. They have a special "key" gizmo, more like a small cell phone that opens the lock boxes on the listed properties which then records the name of the agent showing the house, what time it is shown, how often the property is shown, etc. That is what she forgot to take with her this a.m. but it is okay, she managed without it.
*
She is excited because her daughter and granddaughter arrive late tonight which is soooo cool! Most of their time is going to be spent doing "touristy" things but the weather is not in their favor. The cold weather has moved back in, coming out of the north, and of course, has to arrive right at Easter time/spring break, as the case might be. As I told Joanne, even though the weather will stink, they will still be away from work and school in Ohio, and spending time with their mom, grandmom Joanne, and grandpa/great-granddad Clyde in Florida!
*
Joanne had thrown her sheets into the washer before leaving earlier and I offered to put them in the dryer so they are dry when she gets home later on. Besides being a good housemate and friend, I also had a small load to wash. Every time I do my wash I think of two of my in-laws, Barb and David. When it was only me living here, it was only me that made a mess and only me who cleaned it up. That would be to the exclusion of the housekeepers who came once a month, of course. A couple years ago I got a nice tax refund, unexpectedly, because I normally do not lend money to the government interest free. I used part of that overpayment money to replace three of my household appliances, which had come with the Unit. The washer/dryer had seen better days and I was glad to have shiny new ones in my laundry room. I also bought a new fridge with the freezer in a drawer on the bottom, easier to access for a short fat lady!
*
Several decades ago when David was newly out of his family home and living on his own in an apartment, he had washer/dryer privileges from his landlords, who lived on the first floor of the home. Every single time he went to use the machines in the basement, they were draped in covers, sheets perhaps, and he had to remove the covers in order to access the machines. In between loads, he would go down there to switch them over and sure 'nuff, the covers were put back on. It was laughable....and it is not nice to laugh at Polish people who cherish their laundry tools!
*
Well, I am no better! I wipe off my machines, removing the dripped laundry soap from whoever used the machine before me, using the cover of the soap bottle to rinse the inside of the lid and around the rim of the washer to make sure no fuzzies or grunge gathers in my relatively new equipment! I think of David and his covered machinery in the basement where he rented, and how we chuckled about the obsession with keeping them clean. It is me now!!
*
The other day I changed the wash load for Joanne so I could put mine in the dryer and saw that she wears the exact same size and brand of bra that I do. For a fleeting moment, I thought about what would happen if we got them mixed up......fleeting is the key word here, because, for some reason or another, hers were still white! While I am obsessive about keeping the machinery clean and nice, I am totally opposite when it comes to laundry sorting!!!!! It has to stop somewhere, right??? Like you need to know this, my bras take on the color of whatever else is in the load with it, including once when I washed my red shoes.......
*
Whenever I toss in a load of laundry, and when I remove my laundered stuff from the dryer, I think of Barb. When Harv and Barb were visiting here when we lived in Waterford Landing, I came through with the wash basket, about half of which was my nighties. Jokingly I said to Barb that I had to wash a load of nighties and she was just incredulous. "A load of nighties?? How many do you have???" Well, I have oodles of them, like to have a fresh one at least every other day, depending upon the weather, of course. She confessed to having worn her same night shirt, or dorm shirt, for several years, so much as that it had holes in it! I gave her a new nightshirt for her birthday the next year, not a moment too soon. Maybe she has developed a passion for nightwear like my sister, Lynn, and I have, but I do think about Barb nearly every time I take a load of clothes out of the dryer! Lynn likes to wear the more formal nightwear, even making some of the sleep sets herself, but mine are not quite that dressy. I must change clothes before going out for the day.....especially if I have worn the nightie when using the hair color!

Some recent photos

The freshly painted ceramics, some of which were gifts in Timmy's memory now showcased against the red mulch. Thanks, Fausto!
Look at this shot of all the women hard at work sprucing up the flower beds and mulching them! Twila is manning the hose, thinking about spraying Shiloh in her stroller. In the background Sue is using the shovel to clean out along the curb, more than the leaf blower could handle!
During the Easter 4 Kids event, the kids are enjoying their sweet treat made with a crescent roll wrapped around a marshmallow, which disappeared when baked. Like putting Jesus in the grave, and three days later, He is not there! I thank the Lord for the willing and imaginative people running these programs at G. S.!!!
Look out! Here comes Twila with the hose and she is not afraid to use it!!! The grease board invites the parents to come back to see the closing program for Easter 4 Kids, hoping they do eventually come back for their kids! At the registration table, I handed each parent a piece of paper about the closing program, telling them it was their claim check for getting the kids back....some were not all that interested in getting them back!
Lonnie and Ellen are busy in the front flower bed making sure all is tidy and nice for Easter Sunday and ever after, I hope.
Jackie, Janet, Jim and Renee discuss the modis operandi for the flower bed along the church where the Sunrise service will be held. Lonnie dug out the day lilies from previous plantings, split them and then the team got busy and replanted them, along with some fresh annuals.

This is the Thursday dinner, "Breakfast for Dinner". See all the yummy looking food? The food pales next to the good company though. Do I always have that bald spot on the back of head or is that from my nap?
Justin was the only male at the dinner and he came because he wanted so badly to see Miss Brenda. He had not seen her in a long time and misses her, as well as the other ladies at this table. It seems the manners classes I took him to years ago have paid off!
Justin is just barely visible in the kitchen behind the fridge door, perhaps getting out the champagne which we enjoyed in our cranberry juice. Delicious and refreshing, I think it is called an "Hibiscus". See my plate there, by the soda can? I could barely finish all the good food, but believe I did clean the plate once, but not the second time. Too good! Two people were missing from this table---Judy R. and Linda J. If my memory serves, Lynn might have been here for a themed dinner in the past......help me out here, Lynn, if you remember.....

I am attending a funeral this a.m.

........without even leaving my home! Kari Hahm sent the link to her dad's funeral service which was recorded and then posted for others to "attend" in absentia. My niece, Alayna, has already watched and listened, and I knew I was going to do it this a.m. on the "big" computer vs. the laptop in order to get the best sound and reception. Glad that I did, as the privacy of my room is needed for this service. No, I did not know Curt, but look forward to the day that I do meet him in heaven.
*
So far the hymns have been wonderful, of course, with the grade school children of their congregation singing "Children of the Heavenly Father" and reciting the 23rd Psalm in the King James Version. The congregational hymns to this point include "Be Still My Soul", "Behold a Host Arrayed in White", "I Know That My Redeemer Lives", "I'm But A Stranger Here", and "For All the Saints...." It is like being at my own funeral, as well as revisiting Timmy's with some of the same hymns chosen.
*
Yesterday Robbie played the post service music including "Lift High the Cross" which I sang from the pew as we waited to be ushered out. Our delightful young man, Ryan, smiled at me and started to sing too as he went passed my pew. He had nicely assembled and distributed the palm crosses for us to wear on Palm Sunday.

"But yet there breaks a yet more glorious day; The saints triumphant rise in bright array; The King of glory passes on His way. Alleluia!" CW 551 st. 7

Saturday, you may recall, was our Easter 4 Kids program at church. We had about 25 kids this year, compared to the 40 we had at the Christmas 4 Kids event. I am hopeful that once we have our classroom building completed, soon, I pray, we will have more resources, publicity, and whatever else we need to conduct a full-fledged outreach effort through these programs. The turnout for Yard Day, held at the same time as the children's event, was remarkable and the property spruced up very nicely. Looks great! I will have photos in the next posting of our eager workers!
*
My responsibility was the registration table, getting the kids checked in, name tags filled out, and sent on their way to the church for the opening devotion. From there they went to lesson, craft, snack, and games, with a closing service at 11:45 a.m.
*
The idea of the snack was so interesting: the kids were given a crescent roll, unfolded, which represented Jesus' grave. Jesus was represented as a marshmallow, rolled into the crescent by the children, and then baked. They pretended three days were passing as the rolls baked, and then when they bit into their finished roll, it was empty! Like the grave was on Easter morning! What an amazing picture this made for them.
*
Saturday night was dinner at Mongo's with the Rosses and extended family. I was invited to Bruce and Sandy's afterward for cake and ice cream but I respectfully declined as I had one more place to be yet Saturday night----in my own building! My neighbors in the south penthouse were hosting a house concert for a young man's musical group, a graduate of St. Johns CDS, from where Justin graduated. His name is Kort McCumber, and I hope you music aficionados look him up. He plays the sort of music my brother-in-law enjoys and might perhaps host in a house concert of his own......I am only suggesting, David, only suggesting.....Kort's mom was a music teacher and director at St. Johns, too, as well as a musical partner for my neighbor, Donna, whose flute concert Joanne and I attended last Sunday.
*
The concert was lovely though a bit chilly after the sun set and the breeze came off the river. My guess is there was about 80-100 people on the south balcony. As you might know, I met lots of people there, including a new lady who wants to come to Art Guild with me Tuesday night. She lives on the property but not in The Palace and I will go out today to scope out which building she is in to make it easier to find tomorrow night.
*
(Warning!)
Also there was a neighbor from downstairs whose grandson, Brooks, was in Timmy's class at St. Johns. Brooks had his friend, Wyatt, there with them and after the concert, Judee, her son, Bill (Brooks' dad), and Wyatt came down to my house to see the piece of artwork the school children completed of Timmy's and signed in their pre-k handwriting. They are now going on 13 years old, and both boys were taller than I am, go figure! They liked seeing their names on the art work and seeing the names of their classmates, some of whom are no longer at St. Johns. I told Judy and her son, Bill, how Justin and I went through the toys this past week to donate them to a church VPK program, and she asked me how I do it. Until then I held my tears in place, but one sneaked out and hers did too. The boys were uncomfortable a tad, but I assured them that this was natural, what Mom's do. It was brief and we quickly recovered as they looked at the other artwork, Justin's mostly, and I gave my sales pitch for Great Hang Ups shrink-wrap ability as well as framing. No commissions, please.
*
Not quite a year after Timmy died, I was tending the flower bed and marker at the grave site, back when I was there daily. A car pulled up but I kept working on things, not paying much attention. When I looked up, here came Brooks and his dad, with Brooks carrying a bouquet of flowers. His dad said Brooks still talked about Timmy often and wanted to bring him some flowers. No one knows just how significant that gesture was, unless you have experienced something like this yourselves.
*
Brooks birthday party in October of 2000 was the first and only party Timmy attended as a school boy, to which his dad took and picked him up. I was at another birthday party the same day with Justin, we had to split the parties between us, and Brooks' was closer to the office for his father to do the drop off and pick up. We did not know that normally parents stay with their kids at the parties.....but Timmy did fine. I still have the Thomas the Tank Engine train whistle from Brooks party in Timmy's memory box on the hall table. I should have shown that to him, too, but I think those two boys probably had had enough trips down memory lane that night. Not me, I can down that lane over and over again, lest I forget!
