No longer on the river and, again, an empty nester. Back to living on Fleming Island and making some more friends!

Fully clothed and ready for the day!

This may seem like an odd way to begin a posting because who does not get dressed in the morning? Those of us who are trying to figure out what the day will bring, whether to put on the swimsuit and head down toward the pool or to put street clothes for grocery shopping. Yesterday I told Judy R. I was going grocery shopping yet that afternoon but somehow this did not happen. Instead, I made up the two boxes of Kraft Mac 'n Cheese from the pantry closet to have for supper. I had never used this type of mix before, where the cheese is in a foil packet and squeezed over the cooked macaroni. Yech! It tasted vile, in my opinion, sort of had a medicine-y aftertaste. The whole kettleful of calories went down the disposal as well as a container of some unidentified soup Joanne had frozen some time ago. Toast with peanut butter is no match for mac 'n cheese, but it will have to do!

The morning brought a quiet river which is simply glistening in the sun which is doing battle with some cotton clouds. I am sure the fishermen bobbing in their boats appreciate the brief respites from the glare of the sun, as the air temperatures are predicted to have highs about 89 for today. This means I should be getting myself out the door to buy my groceries and get back so I can enjoy the rest of the day poolside. Last night there were lovely breezes which allowed me to have my doors open until bedtime. Linda J. has her windows open when the temperatures are barely 50 above zero but I can only do that when it is about 70 or greater here.....

Let's talk a bit about "thorns in the flesh"---last week I had quite a fright with my sciatica 'rearing' its ugly head (I am so funny!!!) but through the move and afterward, I was none the worse for the wear. Yes, I was achy and moving slowly but have no after effects to speak of. My sisters have their share of physical maladies as well including arthritis of the knees, tendinitis in the wrist plus a goofy thumb, fading vision and hearing, etc. Many of these aches and pains can be attributed to age while some might be blamed on our physiques, since a few of us are "women of size". We look back on the things we used to be able to do without even thinking twice, such as bending over to pick something up from the floor. Now we must decide what else we can do as long as we are down there!! One observation I made when in the midst of four of my sisters is that we all have great skin. We have great skin for our ages!

Some photos from the "big move"! (click on the photos to enlarge)

Here I am, modeling my Christmas antlers found in a dresser drawer in Mom's guest room. Who could resist???

Once the truck was unloaded, it was time for repast! Gabe and Manny climbed up to the table to enjoy some fruit and doughnut holes, the breakfast of champions! Mom is on the left and Lori is sitting in the kitchen. David's guitar is waiting for him to play for us!

My bro-in-law, Randy, Alayna's dad, worked very hard for the move, and even got busy putting up the art work Justin and I purchased at Kohl's at their wonderful sale. He made sure the phone and answering machine were hooked up and is getting some wire to extend the bedroom phone for Mom to make it more convenient to her bed. Thanks, Randy!
This is a picture taken at Mom's "old" house. While it not very clear, the photo shows four of my sisters in one shot! Not the easiest thing to do and all quite by accident! Barely in the shot is Lynn, Lori over by the wall, Jill and Kerry in the foreground, as Kerry is tacking the back securely on Mom's hutch. I hope it held...every time she got one side secured, the opposite popped off, much like making a bed....

This is a gorgeous shot of Lynn carrying up a load of stuff at Mom's new home. You can see the pretty entrance and how some people have their private balconies decorated nicely with flowers.
Mom treated the whole gang to a late breakfast after church and Bible study on Sunday. We picked Perkin's and they nicely accomodated us. In this shot you see Lori, David, Alayna, part of Kerry's face and finally, Justin. Kerry and I shared a patty-melt which proved to be quite the perfect size for us! I also got to catch up with my high school friend, Mary Janke Wakeman and some of her family at the restaurant. Two of her family members have stayed with us here in Florida when the Synod school choirs tour.

Another angle of the same shot, this one including our "hostess", Mom, plus a better picture of Kerry.
Sunday afternoon was a bit quieter than Saturday's was, and Alayna spent some time trying to entertain the boys while the rest of us unpacked boxes or cleaned at Mom's old apartment. Here she is watching Gabe play a video game of some sort.

Manny gave his great grandma a great hug before leaving with Grandma Lynn. She was babysitting the boys while Lisa and Noah stayed at a haunted hotel in Kewaunee Sunday night.
Justin and Alayna took the boys across the street to play at Washington Park but Justin ended up having more than his hands full when they came back. Seems like a guy needed to ride up on those big shoulders back to Grandma K's house!

My expensive luggage tag

Oh, how wonderful to wake up in my own bed this morning with sun pouring across my face. My initial reaction was "ugh......." but then I remembered---this means morning!!!! "Rouse and shine", as Timmy used to say. When I came home from my trip just prior to midnight, I discovered clean laundry spread on my bed which means that Joanne must have been here doing some wash. Yup, that is what it means! She had spent some time cleaning in her former bathroom and washed the towels and cleaning rags, which meant my laundry had to move along.
*
Monday morning we had a light breakfast with Tommy and Linda before saying our good-byes and thanking them for putting up with us---I mean, putting us up. We stopped at Lowe's to make our return of unused packing boxes and then headed to Copp's to pick up the poppyseed-filled doughnuts, hot dogs, and cheese curds to fill the empty spots purposely left in my suitcase. We arrived at Mom's to find Lynn and the little boys waiting for us as well as Kerry. After spending a few minutes with us, Kerry had to head back to Oshkosh to take care of things in her own apartment.
*
Jill came up after she opened the ice cream parlor so we could say "good-bye" to her and Alayna popped in from her friend's sleep-over party, still wearing her pj's, to hug and kiss on us before we headed for the airport. Lori and David had left the day before so we had said "'bye" to them Sunday. Lisa and Noah had gone to Kewaunee on Sunday to stay in a "haunted hotel", historic in nature, so Lynn had the boys overnight. They are just darling, Gabe and Manny. While they love to eat and ask so sweetly for a "'nack", Manny is so thin that his ribs poke out! Gabe is more sturdy but not what I would call heavy, solid is the word. Manny is just the opposite, skinny and fine.
*
Justin and I said our farewells to Mom, with promises to keep in touch and to have a safe trip home. She was grateful for all the help and the getting things organized for her. Now her job will be to locate where we put her treasures and stuff as we rather hurriedly unpacked the boxes. As Mom claims, she has all winter to unpack her stuff, and says she will do a little each day....I know how that goes, though---out of sight, out of mind! The family all likes the new apartment, feeling much more confident about this living situation than we did the last one, which the County was using as a "half-way house" or supervised living residence for people with social or mental problems. Not a good or safe place for Mom, especially since it was in such disrepair.
*
Speaking of her lovely new home, I met an old friend at Copp's yesterday as he ran through the store. Nick was the man who actually built the apartment building where Mom now lives. We hugged on each other a couple times, plenty of history between us after years of friendly competition in Manitowoc building houses in the same neighborhoods and even living only a block or two apart at times. As Justin and I left the store, I told how Nick came to the hospital to see us when Justin was born, and reported that he donated blood to replace that which was used for me during and after the birth. That is Nick! Although he was in hurry, he called to me on the way out to tell me that he is no longer building homes, out of it for two years now, but is now working in the mission arm of his Free Church congregation in Manty. Still building, just that with a much longer warranty!
*
Our rental car had XM radio which allowed for us to listen to Fox News all the way to the airport. I listened while Justin snoozed, which was no problem. He did not have to be a deer spotter for me during the summer months. After we returned the car, we made our way to the terminal to get our luggage checked through and get our tickets. My nice luggage tag had been torn from my suitcase once more so Justin told me to get the paper tag made out while he checked us in through the kiosk. He had to type in the confirmation code and such to get our tickets and I worked on getting my tag made out, expecting it would be torn off as well during the handling process.
*
Justin turned and asked me if we should upgrade to Business Class because seats were available. He said, "It's only $49 each......" and I thought for two seconds, then said, "Sure, why not?", thinking that was quite the bargain!! Only once before, I think, I sat in First Class, now referred to as Business, which makes it more politically correct. We got our receipts as the man put the luggage gizmos on the handles to forward them between the planes and we dragged the bags to the security man for his handling. I cautioned the security agent not to let anything happen to my new luggage tag, which had just ended up costing me nearly $200!!!! What Justin told me and what I understood was two different things----while it WAS $49 each, it actually was $49 each ticket, each leg of the trip! Ooops! Talk about communicating! It was too late to undo so I chalked it up to the perfect end of the very busy weekend and a hard working boy. The good news was that we did not pay $15 each per bag checked through nor did we pay for the beverages enjoyed in Business Class. I have two tiny, partial bottles of rum on the kitchen counter, valued at $49 each!!!
*
And, here is the good news----all four airplane rides allowed me to close the seat belt without having to use the extension! On the last ride, Justin helped me, but it went "click" without any discomfort or squishing and squeezing!!! Low and tight across the hips, just as the flight attendent informed us!

Happily resting tonight

What a great day and greater yet, evening! Justin is busy on his laptop and I am using Linda's as the three of us are watching "Runaway Bride" in her family room. Justin and I got back here about 8:00 or so, after dinner with Kerry at Friar Tuck's, where I had a bratwurst. Other than freezing my arms off in there, we had a lovely meal together. Jill was waiting at Mom's for Kerry to get back from dinner so we parted company there. We, mostly me, I guess, had enough unpacking and hanging up of pictures at Mom's so that is why we came "home" to rest.
*
This a.m. as we arrived at church, we saw someone being helped up from the pavement in the driveway at church. Linda recognized immediately who it was, and I realized it was Kerry doing the assisting, as well as Lettie. She had pulled part way into the driveway and Kerry helped move the injured lady into her car for transport home. The lady's glasses had broken and cut her eye and she had a small cut on the hand which hit the ground. Kerry felt so very badly that she could not grab Marilyn before she fell, but I was glad she was there to help her.
*
I met the new pastor at First German this a.m. before church. He actually came outside to meet me, which one of my sisters nicely pointed out. Linda had already warned him about me so he was braced and ready for the hug. I also had a hug for Pastor Rosenow who was in the parlor, greeting. It was a great great service and wonderful to sing in First German. We attended Bible study after church and then the whole gang except for Lisa and family, went to Perkins to have a late breakfast/early lunch. Mom wanted to thank us for our help with the move and all that, plus we just love to eat together!
*
We went to Kohls to return a couple items and ended up coming back with an art piece for Mom's new bathroom wall. Once at Mom's, Lori, Kerry and I got busy going through boxes, putting up pictures while in search for a missing bag of stuff from Mom's medicine cabinet. The apartment looks more like a home than even the other apartment did, which we attribute to having much more light flowing in and seemingly more room. After dinner, I got a phone call from Jill to report, "It's a blessed day!!!" ----the missing bag finally turned up! It was in a clothes hamper and not a box, which is where we had been looking....who knew? Nobody knew, until Kerry heard where the bag was found. She winced and said to Justin and me, "I think I might have put it in there........" Oops! When packing up on the way out the door, things sometimes get put just any old place and that is what happened here. We rejoice and drink a toast to Jill for solving the mystery! After all that excitement today, I think bed will feel just great tonight...and tomorrow night in my own bed again. I am singing, "Let the sun shine....Let the sun shine in...the sun shine in...." for when I get back to Florida!

Greetings from Wisconsin!

A great comedian once said that everyone has to be somewhere, and he is right! I am somewhere---I am in Manitowoc! One piece of good news is that I not freezing my butt off either. It was in the low 70's today and I was warm when hustling about, packing up Mom's stuff. The packing which remained for us to do went relatively quickly, allowing time for a nice lunch at Perkins. We also dropped off a bag of items at the Lutheran High resale shop, one less box to pack up this way.
*
Justin and Mom took a TV to the new apartment so she could wait for the cable man to come. While she waited there, Justin and I went to Kohl's to look for some stuff for her walls, since she decided, with my influence, to update her decor. We LOVE to do that type of thing so we were in our glory! We hope she likes her new pieces and we look forward to hanging them up. The new apartment is real nice and I know Mom will be really happy there. Especially now that the cable is hooked up! But tonight will be long for her at the "old" place without any TV!
*
Well, here I am with Linda and Justin in her family room, watching some TV and visiting and typing. Guess I will wrap up my typing and stick with the visiting....Talk to you later!

"Lovely work---Soft but strong"

When I got home from my massage therapy treatment, I immediately opened my e-mails. One came from the president of the Art Guild with the sad message that one of the characters from the Thrasher-Horne Center had died in late August. Last week, actually, now that I think about it. Tony Falcone, Curator at THCA, died of a rapidly progressing cancer. He was the man who hung the show which the Art Guild did last fall when Judy R. was here for her stay with me. Not only did Tony hang the show, he also served as the Judge for us, my third show to enter, and my third Juried in. Whew! Later, I received a "Report Card" in the mail from Tony, showing me the "grades" he gave my piece, all 3's and 4's out of a high of 5. Across the bottom of the page he had written a note which said, "Lovely work--soft but strong". The report card has been on my desk a long time, as have most pieces of paper, sadly, but now this one has grown in much greater value to me. Tony's absence will be noticeable...............

Here is the painting which got the favorable report card from Tony last fall titled
"Rains Unites the Earth and Sky" using only two colors of paint for the whole piece

How great to start the day laughing!

My friend, Dee Dee, from grade school through high school, sent me something this morning that just made me roar with laughter! And it is not even 8:30 yet here! She sent a picture, not to scare anyone, it claims, of what to look for in swine flu. Paging down, there was a picture of a smiling pig man ("Seinfeld" reference) sitting on a doctor's lap. It said, "If you wake up looking like this, do not go to work!" I am laughing writing about it! The picture is a photo-shopped pighead on a human body with modifications.....it is just funny. I wrote back to tell Dee Dee I have had this illness for some time now!

Well, the mess was less today but still significant as once more the silver was removed from my hair. It is time for my hair cut but do not know if I have time for that or not, with the day being broken up with appointments and things to do. Including packing (I know, Mom, I always put it off....) The wash machine is taking care of the get-up I wore and things I used for the silver removal, hoping that nothing good was ruined. Thinking I am being so incredibly careful, it still gets "slung around", as Kathy B. describes it, without my trying.

A new rep from Thrivent Financial is coming by today to visit with me and go over my policies. After she is finished, I am planning to go to Office Max for a large poster board to use on the bulletin board at church for the missions board, to make it look purty. Plus deliver some of the newsletters I printed off in color for a couple special lady friends who do not have Internet at home. The ones run off in the office are in black and white, not quite as eye-pleasing as the color ink copies come out. At 2:15 pm I get to see the massage therapist, Carol, who will help me with my sciatica. I end my night with choir rehearsal and at some point, packing my bags. My luggage is either huge, or the smaller bags which can go in the overhead bin. The medium-sized piece is at Justin's, I think, because they all fit one inside the other, and it is not here. The largest bag will work well for bringing back the poppyseed-filled doughnuts and cheese curds, but is more difficult for me to haul around. Last night I told Martie I would bring back some non-slimy natural casing hot dogs from Newton Meat Market for us to eat on Movie Night!

Lately I have been complaining, rather, remarking, about the terrible amounts of dust I have in my rooms, particularly my bedroom. In part, I believe the computer, with its jet engine operating system, might move the dust around some, but what is the original source of this dust? In conversation with Lori, my sister, the other day, she was telling about Dusty being in his dormitory at college. I asked if he has to have his plastic covering on the bed and futon as he did at home, because he has dust mite allergies. She said the main thing is to keep things vacuumed and she cannot expect he will do that, nor the roommate, so he will need to depend upon his medications. I had complained about the dust on my books and magazines piled on my bed, and she scolded, "Quit losing so much skin!!!" Ewww! Am I allowing the fan on my computer to shoot my dead skin all over the house??? Why aren't I thinner then?

Here is a little something posted on Facebook by someone I do not even know personally. She is a "friend" of my blogging friend, Jami, and she made my day for me. She wrote the following after I answered a status update by Jami: "Kim, you're a boost for all of us....Trust me!! I take what you say in your post and try to use it myself....You have no idea how many times you've posted something and it actually worked for me too!!!!" "I love to tell the story!"
