A quiet Reformation Day

I have set the two kitchen digital clocks back an hour but have yet to stop my grandfather clock in the dining room. We gain an hour of sleep/rest tonight due to the end of daylight saving time. I sure won't mind the additional hour of sleep but am sure it's going to mess with my head for at least a week. We might have all kinds of people at Bible study tomorrow if our members forget to reset the clocks. Fortunately my electronics do it themselves so I don't have to worry about that.

Justin has been home with me all day, confessing to me this a.m. that he has a tooth bothering him. It has been acting up every since he took a chip out about two months ago. His reason for not telling me?  He didn't want me to tell him to get it fixed. I know he can't get off work for things like dentist appointments but certainly we could have made some arrangements. Well, now it's keeping him awake, or waking him up. Fortunately for him, his winter schedule begins as of Monday so he can go in and get it repaired. Hopefully a filling will do the trick and he won't lose the tooth. Having your dentist as a friend sure doesn't hurt---I communicated with her this a.m. and we are all set for Monday.

This morning I got the church newsletters printed off for those who get the special color version plus I wrote out the Ladies' Group Minutes. They were e-mailed to Terri and printed for my records.  In between I made my baked beans for tomorrow and had them cooking on the stove for a couple hours. Oh, how good they smelled! My lunch was the last of one of the egg casseroles leftover from yesterday's luncheon, which was delicious. The recipe described it as being 'can't miss' and that it was!

My friend, Kathy H., enjoyed the casseroles so much that she asked for the recipes. Her niece is getting married and Kathy is helping her brother with the wedding stuff. One thing she has to do with Gary is prepare breakfast one of the mornings. I e-mailed her the recipes today so she can make use of them. She was thankful to taste-test them yesterday and knows they are delicious! AND, she is much more comfortable in the kitchen than am I so certainly this will work out nicely for them.

Justin had a coupon soon to expire from Papa John Pizza so we decided to have that for dinner. He was ordering it online and given a time of delivery of 70 minutes. Normally it's much less than that but with the big college football game going on we figured that extended the delivery time. It should arrive just right for us to eat and then watch Jeopardy!

I was also expecting my little neighbor girl to come by trick or treating so when the doorbell rang, I went running to see Oakley's costume. Instead it was the pizza lady, with her face painted, bringing our dinner. Only about 30 minutes had passed and we were surprised she was there already. Well, we ate dinner early tonight but still watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeppy. And Oakley was a no show---shoot! I had gotten her some little gifts as usual so perhaps I'll deliver them to her grandma's house tomorrow or the next day.

This is my kind of Reformation Day----nice and quiet. Tomorrow will be the other kind with the Festival being celebrated at two services. I am so looking forward to tomorrow but boy, will it be a busy one. Two Sundays in a row where I'll be exhausted, but well fed!
Michael sent me this photo while we were eating dinner. Yes, I can just smell them...mmmm! Mike and he are making smoked Boston butts plus the brats as we are hosting the area congregations for the Reformation Festival. It will smell wonderful during Bible study in the morning---bbq!

A blessed event!

Today my neighbor, Kay, and I have had the pleasure of hosting an event to bring attention to the Clay PACE Center for Girls which recently opened for this county's girls 'at risk'. I have written about this on more than one occasion, the first time after I heard Senator Bradley speak at the Republican Women's meeting last June. The State budget had been tweaked and tucked but somehow some funding was found to support this important program. Primarily the PACE program offers girls a chance to get caught up academically in a non-threatening and safe environment, plus provides them with social support and skills so they can be ready when they leave school and move into the workforce, etc.

Here are some photos from the gathering:

Apple dumplings which Justin started last night and I finished this a.m.
Kay bought the fancy cupcakes and the fruit tray. I made breakfast casseroles. This one was the easiest and went the quickest.
This casserole was intended for the slow cooker but I had concerns about it being lost in the bottom of it. Justin researched the conversion for me so I could bake it instead and happily turned out perfectly! Made with cinnamon rolls, heavy cream plus eggs.
This is the table before the ladies started their breakfast
The Executive Director of PACE, Destiny, addressed the ladies. Seated is Kathy M. and standing is Kay, my fellow hostess
Kay got a turn to speak to the group as a representative of the Board for PACE. Seated from left are Susan, Lynn, Judy C., Debbie, Betty, Jacquie, and Kathy M.
This young woman, a student at PACE, was a riveting speaker, sharing her story of how she found the program and how it's benefiting her. More than one person besides myself found themselves counting their blessings after hearing what kind of life she's had. But Tay Tay is full of hope for her future, announcing she wishes to become an entrepreneur and motivational speaker. I think today her career began!
While Kay addressed the group, Terri, Destiny, and Kimberly, against the wall, the lady who gave Nancy and me the tour in August, listened. In the foyer you can see the piles of items donated by the ladies to make available for the girls at PACE to purchase with points they earn during the week for meeting goals and such. Even people who couldn't be there dropped off items for the girls.  (Click the photo to see the piles better)

It was our privilege to host this event and am blessed to have these generous ladies in my life and today, in my home. I even had people ask to be invited---how about that? I am already thinking about whom to invite for the next one, probably after New Year.

The ladies were able to fill out cards with their contact info and a place to sign up for tours. I didn't get a look at the cards to see how many did that, but my guess is that a good portion are more than interested.

Thankfully Terri and Debbie helped get the donations hauled down to the car and then helped me tidy up. Terri even helped Kay carry her stuff home again while I put my stuff away. In no time it was all cleaned up, looking like nothing happened. Terri and I sat for a bit before she had to get back for work. My bones and muscles like it that I am now resting, too. They are exhausted but thrilled right along with the rest of me!

Fall Fest Sunday

Today our church was having more than one event including our monthly Fellowship Sunday plus a Fall Fun Fest for the kids. Before church one of the ladies involved in putting this together expressed her concern that there would be no kids, but we did end up with about 8, four of whom were non-members. I feel badly for the groups who go through so much effort and then we don't have the expected participation. My goddaughter, Sarah, had her two cousins there which helped, the youngest boy being in our preschool. They enjoyed the bounce house, bobbing for apples, having balloon shapes made, pumpkin painting tables and other set ups. My group left when Judy had the Fellowship stuff taken care of, and went to have lunch.
Terri prompted Gretchen and Ethel to pose by the hay bales after church. The ladies didn't want to sit down and get hay in their pants so they stood. So funny!

Judy's granddaughter, a student at UF, doesn't care for Chili's so we went this week to Sam's St. Johns Seafood. I am not ordinarily a fish eater but at this place I do like their fried pollack. Michael was able to take home the cheese grits which automatically come with the meal. He took home three people's portions so will eat for several days! Those of us who were able to track the progress of the Jaguar game which had begun at 9:30 a.m. in London, did so. While we were dining, the Jags won!! Something cool happened as we sat chatting at our table---a lady passed by on her way to the door and softly spoke to me. I didn't really hear all she said but Victoria asked me, "Did you know that lady? She said you look beautiful..." Shoot! I wish I'd understood and said something as nice in return, rather than just smiling at her.

Justin was at Jesse's to watch the game and enjoy chicken wings. Who eats wings at that hour? But they don't care. He is also making Fruity Pebble waffles. Jesse is superstitious, likes to do the same things done the last time the Jags win, so I guess they will have to stay and play in London!!!  Next week is a BYE so Justin will be in church again.

November 1st we are hosting a joint Reformation service with three other congregations in our area, one church over an hour away. Supposedly there will be a combined choir but when I talked to Anne from Victory she said they hadn't been rehearsing anything. Oh, oh...our choir was planning on some support from across the river and I hope that changes by next weekend. Today we had two people in our rehearsal besides the director and accompanist. The other folks, three of whom were teens, were involved in the Fall Fest, so an alto and soprano practiced our hymns. We are using one from the Supplement and one from hymnal. Interestingly, we are singing "God's Word is Our Great Heritage" to the tune of Ein Feste Burg which really takes some concentration!!
At Easter this year, H & B were visiting from WI and attended Good Shepherd with Justin and me. This time they are planning to attend worship at Victory and Harv's brother is going with them. Pastor H. told me he always celebrates Reformation on the last Sunday of October so they are singing "Ein Feste Burg" today. I understand that besides the adult choir, they are having a children's choir singing as well. I am sure it was an awesome service.

What a good day!

This evening Justin and I entertained my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harv and Barb, visiting from our home town. Harv,  Justin's godfather, and his wife, are staying with his brother who had other plans for the evening so they were all ours. Justin and I met them at "Koko's" (aka Saigon Tokyo) for an early dinner, as Justin reminded me that they are from WI...Ha ha. Our friends and family from up north eat earlier than we do, usually, and we don't want anyone to pass out. While Justin and I waited for them, Tracy, the owner, came over to sit with us to chat, and offered us a complimentary appetizer to enjoy before dinner. Very nice!

H & B were a bit late as they got involved watching a college football game, the WI Badgers, but time was not an issue for us. We enjoyed our meal and the conversation, plus the little show that Eddie put on for us while cooking our meals. Thanks to the appetizer and the bounteous portions, both Barb and I had leftovers to go with us. Justin had the sushi meal so never has leftovers and Harv ordered scallops which he cleaned right up.

I rode home with H & B to show them the way, as the last time they were at my home, Easter time, they followed me. Justin went ahead in my car, and when we got here, he had the front door open for us. We spent the rest of the evening in the family room, talking, after checking the final score of the Badger game. Fortunately for us Justin had no other plans for the evening so he could stay to visit with his auntie and uncle. Barb had just lost her mom in the last couple of weeks, a lady dear to Justin and me, so we talked a bit about that. Mainly her concerns were locating the items her mom had wanted for her funeral including items which were placed in her coffin. That touched me.
My neighbor, Ellen, shared this photo with me, taken tonight

Just before they were leaving tonight, we enjoyed an up close and personal fireworks show. Our building had been notified that there would be such a show, put on by the wedding families at The Club, but I had forgotten, even though I was the one who shared the information!! H & B liked it, too, saying they'd never seen one quite so close. It was just to the north of our building, in full sight of The Club. Wow!  Justin and I pull out all the stops when company comes!!

Earlier in the day I was invited to breakfast with Terri, once again meeting at Grumpy's. The second time in a week! I had misfiled my gift certificate from Grumpy's (have now found it) so had to actually pay for my lunch. I have almost enough left on the certificate for one more meal, courtesy of my CO kids!  The hostess seated us at the 'romantic' table, a two-top situated in the corner. When Terri found me there she said, "No one puts Baby in a corner!", ala "Dirty Dancing", which was humorous. But it was okay to be out of the way of all the traffic this restaurant has.

We had asked Judy to join us since she was over at church but she was going to see her grandson play soccer. She doesn't babysit for him any longer so this is an opportunity for her to see him again. We'll have lunch tomorrow so that's okay if she misses out this one time. When talking on the phone this a.m. Judy told me she had gone over this week and trimmed our friend, Betty's, shrubs which had extended beyond the sidewalk, blocking her path. That Judy is something else!

This afternoon I talked for some time with Linda, this time on the phone instead of the computer. She had an absolutely amazing evening at church last night for a marriage 'retreat' type of event. That will be a whole 'nother posting, I am afraid. I am so glad for her, and for Tommy, and those others who were able to participate. I was cool to be hear her voice again, though there is nothing ever stopping us from calling, we simply choose other methods of communication these days!

All day plans

The morning started with a jaunt over to The Club to meet Nancy for breakfast. She was going to be short on her monthly minimum, thanks to the cabana being closed! I had met mine having dinner with my friends on Casual Grille Night for Pat's birthday a few weeks ago. Thanks to Happy Hour and Trivia she used part of her minimum and our breakfast should probably get her closer, if not there. Sometimes it doesn't seem to take long, as singles has a lower requirement, as expected. Anyway, I was hungry for some of their delicious bacon. Woe is me, there was no hot buffet today!!
As I walked over, this black cat had me in its sights!

There is a major event being held at The Club tonight so the group which usually meets on Friday mornings was not there. Nancy and I ordered from the menu instead and got orders of bacon from the kitchen which was not done the same as on the buffet. It had to do, I guess. Of course, it was just fine and we enjoyed our breakfasts. We talked about the upcoming PACE event I am hosting next week Friday. I am getting so excited about it.
This rose was along the pool fence as I walked back home.

While I would have liked to stay to talk some more, I had stuff to take care of at home before turning around to meet my next appointment, this time at Panera. I was meeting my friend, Carol, there. We don't usually have lunch but today was different. I got my favorite mac 'n cheese with a to-go box for the balance of it. Half is even too much, quite filling, especially since having bacon and toast for breakfast!  She had a turkey sandwich and we shared a cherry Danish. We talked for hours, catching up on missed news. She spends much time in the mountains at their other home so I now cherish the moments!

This later afternoon one of my friends from the pool, Debbie, came by with some donations for the PACE event next week. She was ill, having just come from the doctor but insisted she felt good enough to swing by. It was funny that she met my co-host, Kay, in the elevator and told her she had stuff for the event. Debbie was quite generous in her donations, even purchasing new board games besides her other hygiene and beauty aid items for the girls. Awesome!  Kay and I invited the ladies from our building and those from our water exercise class, plus I was contacted by two people who asked to attend. How about that??

New friends and old ones

Not too long ago I got home from The Club where it was Happy Hour and Trivia night. I walked over there after finishing my chat time with Linda via Facebook while watching The Five. As I approached the building, a group of ladies sitting at the bar in the garden room turned to look at me so I waved. Once inside, I went over to the group where my friend, Kim the Second, was seated with her friend whom I've met before, and two other ladies. Kim introduced me to them, Clare and her friend, Cora. I mentioned them all looking at me and they said that Kim told them how I always match my outfits so that's what they were looking at. My shoes matched my top as did my earrings---I do have a reputation to uphold!

Kim and her friend were going to be playing Trivia but due to Kim's physical maladies so they went back to sit at the bar. Clare and Cora sat at the table and we played as a small team. Clare and her husband just joined The Club and this was her first outing. I hope she enjoyed herself, and that Cora did as well, so they come again. She gave me her contact information in order for us to get together another time. I love it! We lost at Trivia but had a great time doing so!!

I have to do my homework for tomorrow as we are getting ready to finish off Isaiah with chapter 66. What a wonderful trip this has been---looking back, and to the present, and to the future through the words of this prophet and his inspired writings. Next time we are studying the two Timothys and then into Titus. This came about from a suggestion I made after Harold made an errant comment to me about voting. That brought up I Timothy and now, our next course of study. Thanks, Harold, for stepping into it!!

A "Hold Thou Thy Cross" type of day

October is the month where, among other things, miscarriages or stillbirth losses are recognized. I find myself joining them in their losses though I did get to enjoy my child for 5 years. This morning I began my day by reading one of the blogs I follow where the pastor wrote about the roots of hymn "Abide With Me". He relates the history of the author and includes the hymn stanzas in his posting. The closing one I will go out on a limb and say 'always' tears me up: "Hold thou my cross before my closing eyes, shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee; in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me." Sigh....

Later at Bible study we were in Colossians, talking about how the people then (and now) were looking to angels and other types of mysticism in a worshipful sense. There was discussion involving certain TV programs showing haunted places in St. Augustine, and how can the 'screams' coming from the buildings be explained. Pastor talked about the ability of the devil to do such things attempting to work against people's faith and what the Bible says. This was an interesting conversation.

It was additionally brought up about the people who have 'been to heaven and come back', how is that explained. Whether those people actually 'see' heaven or if they experience physiological or drug induced visions...The Bible is the only source we need for describing heaven and how one gets there. I mentioned the great comfort I get from the words Christ spoke from the cross to the criminal next to Him: "Today you shall be with me in paradise". He doesn't tell the guy he has to linger and haunt buildings, nor would the criminal get a peek and then come back to earth. Nope, He said today, and that is quite comforting to me.

We talked about what we think heaven will be like, our only true reference source again being the Bible. I brought up, through involuntary tears, a portion of a fiction book I read a few years ago called "The Shack". That book was really out there, but I did enjoy the portion when the father whose daughter was murdered was given a glimpse of heaven. There he saw Jesus playing with little children in a meadow, and his daughter stopped playing long enough to acknowledge him and indicate her joy of being in heaven. Of course, that just blew me away, such a beautiful picture. The Bible does not indicate this will occur but tells us about the bliss beyond compare, where angels are surrounding the throne and singing God's praises day and night. Just thinking about that evokes tears.

At lunch I shared a picture with the ladies which was sent by Angelo's grandma (he is my great nephew) of him showing my mom his new Kindle. This 5 year old got the Kindle on his birthday, imagine that! I told the ladies how happy I was that Angelo was celebrating his 5th birthday, and got teary eyed again. There is just something about little boys and their 5th birthday that gets me. I am thankful to have the friends I do, who don't care if a tear or two slips out. In my car was a bouquet of flowers which had graced our worship yesterday. Betty donated them to me after the service for placing at the cemetery. And she never knew Timmy. I love that, so thoughtful of her. She told me today she is having flowers on ThanksLiving too and said I can have those for Timmy's grave as well.

Justin and I were planning to have dinner out tonight, his pay day, but he came home with a headache, which he'd had all day. We instead ate leftovers for dinner. I have a headache of my own, I think it's my usual crying headache. At least I hope it is so tomorrow when I wake up, it will gone. And I hope Justin's headache is gone in the morning, too. Poor guy!

Stuff to ponder

Brrrr...It's nippy out there, only 77 above zero. It sure looks lovely, though, with nice blue skies and not a cloud to be seen. The occasional boat is moving along the river and yes, the manatees are basking in the sunshine. I hadn't seen them since the Sunday that Linda was coming and now yesterday they showed up. I wonder where they've been hiding!

Speaking of Linda, the birthday girl is off celebrating with her hubby for the weekend, visiting the Apostle Islands, venturing into the UP, and a scenic ride along the lake shore. She said the wind took care of the pretty fall colors but it's still picturesque for the ride. Justin and I saw on F & F this a.m. that the UP might get snow today so that could add a bit more excitement to their weekend. She made me laugh last night when she texted me upon arrival that Tommy determined 'the sea was angry that day, my friends...' I bet it was! I hope she does well on their scenic cruise ride today, and won't be a replay of our famous deep sea fishing outing!

A few recent observations: This a.m. I was reading FB postings from folks I know who attended a Christian rock concert. Some noted how nice it was to 'worship' with so many people at one time. Earlier this week another person I know was going with her friend to an event where a well-known 'medium' was appearing. Another young friend goes to a Christian gym where they do more than just workout, from what is posted. Another person is toying with metaphysical spirituality.

On Fox & Friends today two of the pundits were looking at recent focus group info following the debate on Tuesday. There was a amazingly high number of Republicans who were in favor of increasing socialism. This is so frightening. The man who does the groups stated how the language is changing---words don't mean now what they used to. He said by this time 2016 we will have a whole new definition on a lot of things. What a mess!

On another note, Justin came into my room and announced quite sadly that he feels like a bad son. I asked, "Why?" and he said he wouldn't be available to take me to the airport the day I leave because Ron's wedding is the night before. He knows that 6:00 a.m. will far too early for him to get up nor would I want him to. I'll have to ask someone else to get up that early because of my bad son. Truthfully I hadn't thought about the wedding being the night before, but chose Saturday so it would be easier for him to take me. Nuts! Plan B, I guess.

"PACE"ing myself

Good ole' Connie got me get out of bed this morning and hustle to the railing to photograph the concrete being poured in our detached garages. And I did it, while yet wearing my nightie! I figured most of my neighbors have already seen me in less than that (my swimsuit) so I figured it was safe. I got a couple of pictures, though from the railing.

Since I was up I might as well get dressed, so I did just that. More than a little bit was I wishing Nancy W. had called to have breakfast at The Club because I really wanted some bacon, but she didn't. I know she had much on her plate already (ha, ha) getting ready for a gathering at her house for her alma mater's home coming which is tonight. Every year her classmates get together to have a party and then go to the football game, or is it that they party after the game? Anyway, she is tied up today so no breakfast for me.
This is a bracelet Justin gave me for Christmas many years ago. It is NOT going to be donated, it stays with me!

I got to work on a few things I have been delaying for too long including updating the prayer chain. I contacted everyone on the list to see who has been contacted and who has not, etc. to fix any broken links. Hopefully we can get things operating smoothly in good time. Besides that project, I also got busy on the PACE Center for Girls event which I am co-hosting with Kay, my neighbor. Last year we did a fund raiser for Glo Smith, running for Senate (didn't make it) and this year, a more local reason. Kay is on the Board for PACE, where Nancy W. and I had toured just before Linda came for her visit. This is the program I heard about from Sen. Bradley at our Republican Women's meeting in June.

We are having a breakfast gathering this time, asking some ladies we know in common to come hear about PACE and perhaps clean out their jewelry boxes for us. Not a shake down, but everyone has stuff in their collections they no longer wear, and the girls would love to have it. The Center has a point system for the students and after earning a certain amount of points, the girls can redeem them for items in their 'store'. Often it's necklaces or bracelets, school items, lip gloss, other things donated for the girls to earn. I have picked out several things to donate in my house---knick knacks I can live without (I say that now....), extra necklaces and bracelets. We were provided with a Wish List from the Director which the attendees can use, too, if they so desire. Kay is feeling poorly right now, but she'll be ready to help with the planning, etc. before the 30th, when the event is scheduled. I am excited to be doing this, even have a few recipes to try for the big day!

A Monday wrap

Yesterday was a bustling one for me, so much so that my shoulder ached and my ankle, I think, hurts. Not sure if it's the ankle when it's the top part of my foot where it connects to my leg, but it is paining me. Last night I decided to apply some muscle relief ointment to my shoulder and ended up gagging myself on the scent. Phew! Is it minty? Or how do I describe that aroma? Not only is on my shoulder but also on my pillow and probably on my nightie. Phew again! It did the trick but think I'd be better off with some Blue Emu instead, 'and you won't stink!" (That ad always makes me think of Kramer on "Seinfeld", drinking the Hennigans.)

My shoulder didn't get sore from my activities Monday, though, but probably because that big, fat lady slept on it funny or something. Morning started with Bible study at church, only 6 of us at the table. I look forward to Bonnie feeling well enough to return to Bible study, as she brings so much to the conversation. Rather than joining my church friends for lunch, I joined the Flying Noodles group at La Nopalera for our last close of the season event. Marlena had planned a third event but not enough signed up for it, so no tea party this year. We had to keep adding tables to ours at La Nop. I asked the waiter how many were reserved for, and he said he didn't know. Our faithful leader was faithfully 20 minutes later than the rest of us!

Most of us had ordered already so were almost done by the time the later comers were, but La Nop is very swift with serving people. Marlena addressed the group, announcing those who had the best attendance, Pat G. second year running! plus the next runners up. Our actual classes ended rather abruptly with rains and overcast skies, but once or twice a "Noodle" would show up for a private lesson!  Overall we had 22 individuals who came for class, which is fantastic, including two men. Sadly Burney did not come to the pool side lunch nor did he come to La Nop, that rascal. Because he is from ND, he is still swimming laps and will do so until ice forms on the surface of the water!

After lunch I got home and got to hear the last hour of Rush's show while I printed off newsletters for our prospect folks for church. On them I got to invite our prospects to our Fall Festival at the end of the month, plus the Reformation Festival at the beginning of the next. Chefs Mike 'n Mike are cooking the meat for the Reformation meal and my mouth waters in anticipation of such. The members are bringing the side dishes for that meal, Oktoberfest-themed. Wonder if anyone will think to bring beer...I made the sign-up sheet but didn't leave a line for refreshments!
Justin and me posing with Harvey and Clara in their apartment, Christmas, 2008. I look like Barb (their daughter) in this picture because I had my new glasses on, used for driving. The man who took the photo was not familiar with my camera so we are blurry. Do not adjust your sets!

I also wrote out some cards including a sympathy card for my sister-in-law, Barb, and her family. I should send one to myself as well because I will miss Barb's mom, too, or the memory of her anyway. My bro-in-law, Harv, called to tell me that Clara had passed away peacefully with Barb at her side. She'd been failing quickly especially since her husband died a few years ago, and it's merciful that the Lord took her home. Barb said that the radio was on in the room, a church service playing, when Clara took what was her final breath. When I told Justin about this, he said, "Odds are that's how you'll go, too." I love that boy!

Last night was a Board Meeting for my building and I have love/hate feelings about attending. I take notes there, not Minutes, as I write the newsletter and need to be 'in the know'. But I also don't like knowing and hearing some of the goings on. At the end of the meeting as we filed out, I said to my neighbor, Bob, "Ugh, I need a drink!" and he said, "I had one and it didn't help!" It was funny and sad at the same time. None of the issues are all THAT serious but most of them seem to involve that same old buggaboo involving communication. One heavy issue we will soon deal with is losing many of our Board members who wish to step down at the end of the year. I wouldn't want that job EVER and do my share to support the building by trying to unify people plus write the newsletter! I am leading from behind, which, in my case, actually works!

Oh, those Jags!

It was such a good night's sleep last night, catching up after our long day yesterday. Felt so good! Justin is in Tampa at his friend's house with a couple of his friends to attend the Jaguar game that was this afternoon. The Jags were picked to win over the Bucs, and how I hoped this to be true! For the group of young men, it's probably the last time they will all be together now for a while since Ron is getting married next month and will need to be around for the wedding stuff.

We had Bible study and worship this a.m. as usual. Our class was small again, still missing so many people who used to attend for whatever reasons. The hymns for the day were focused on family and the home, nice choices. I was sorry Justin wasn't there to hear the readings and sing the hymns, which would be good to share in our 'little' family. Judy's granddaughter came with her to church and requested we dine at La Nop instead of Chili's. I really didn't mind, even though I am dining there tomorrow. It is not outside the realm for me to eat someplace back to back! (Metro Diner!) But first we had a brief choir rehearsal after worship where Kristi played with one finger the hymn we are singing for Reformation. Next week Kathy should be there to accompany us and perhaps more people will join.
After our lunch at La Nop, I came home to watch the Jaguars game. UGH! It was awful but not as awful as its been in the past, which gives one hope. At the end of the game, the Jags had lost by only on touchdown, which was scored at the last moment. Again, I did feel badly for Justin and his friends, wishing they could witness a victory, but it was not to be. Justin finally got a Butter Burger and some curds after they left the stadium. They didn't stick around to see that last touchdown, wanting to get back to town early. At least the Packers won, we have that comfort, anyway!

Road trip!

This very early morning Judy and I drove to Leesburg for an LWMS Rally at St. Mark Lutheran. I was sad it was only the two of us but it's hard to stimulate interest in these rallies. Years ago when Mom wintered with me, my church would have sometimes two or three cars of attendees. But, no more. Judy's GPS worked at home but once we started out, it struggled. After she pulled off and fiddled with it, we decided to just use my cell phone's GPS to get us there, and it did!

We arrived right behind a car with three ladies from Victory, with our current president being Anne H. She did a great job running the Rally, with her mentor, Jennifer, coaching her right along. The mission speaker was the former president of the national LWMS who spoke to us about her trip to Napal in 2013. She was leaving right from the Rally to fly to New Mexico as her son-in-law was being installed in his new congregation there the next day. I do hope she made all her connections!
11 different types of Jell-O!!

Our lunch was fried chicken, beans, and slaw, plus Jell-O salads. I took a picture of the table of Jell-O to show Justin, who was with his friends in Tampa. His friends had dined with us for special events and wondered what was up with all the Jell-O. Now he had proof! On the table by each place was a slice of peach pie, crumb topped. Delicious!

After the Rally itself was completed, a group of us had to meet to discuss our involvement in the 2017 National Convention. So much needs to be done well in advance of this major event, and after we left, Judy expressed concern that we might be embarrassed. There is plenty of time before it's Florida's turn to host and hopefully the folks at National HQ will provide the needed influence that all goes well.

Our ride home was directed by Judy's GPS which was now working, and it took us home a different route than when we came down. It seemed as though we made better time going home than our trip down. Judy's family from SC was in town so I didn't even suggest having dinner. She dropped me off at 6:00 or so and I immediately got my dinner ready. Just as I sat down at my desk to eat, my phone went off. Sure enough, it was Judy, asking if I wanted to go to dinner at Metro Diner with Michael and her. Of course! I put my meal in the fridge and off I went.

Michael had just had lunch there with the family who was in town. How cool is that? Last night the manager told us that if we come twice in a day, we would get a discount. The same manager was working tonight who was working last night and he gave us an 'employee discount', the equivalent of a free meal. Michael grabbed the ticket and took care of it for us. Thanks, dear! That was the same manager who told me he'd stock the cooler with Diet Coke for me. Nice!  I ordered the three cheese grilled sandwich with bacon, and ate it like someone was trying to steal it. My side dish was mashed potatoes which I brought home with me for another time, same as last night.

Early to be tonight since I am saddle sore from the 5 hours in the car and all that sitting at the Rally, and then at the restaurant. Judy and I were both awake well before our alarms this morning, so we were quite ready to go to bed. She has her houseguests but they are gone for the evening. Perhaps she will see them in the morning before church, or maybe not!

Pretty cool!

Tonight Justin did not go Whitey’s with his group since a couple of them are going to Tampa for the Jaguar game, which is Sunday. They will be getting wings at some point this weekend so tonight he was available for dinner. He proposed we go to Metro Diner and invited the Chappells to join us. I tried something else from the menu, trying to not get into a rut with their varied choices. Justin looked at the breakfast menu and discovered that the Monte Cristo sandwich appears there. Imagine that---a Monte Cristo for breakfast! I guess why not, though. It’s like having French toast with some ham and cheese, and raspberry jelly. Works for me!

A couple of the staff members there used to work at The Club so I got to say hi to them, plus some of the wait staff recognize us (me) and are good about greeting us. As we were finishing up, the manager stopped by the table to say hello and then, when he saw me, said, “Oh, you’re back. I haven’t seen you in a week or so." Justin told him I have to spread my business around but the manager said he could not accept that. We laughed, and then he asked about our meals. Of course, I offered my compliments on the French dip of which I ate half. He said they make their own au jus from the roast beef they serve. Everything is fresh and homemade for the Diner, the waitress telling us that the only thing frozen there is the ice!

Anyway, I said to him that the one thing I have a problem with is not having Diet Coke. He was sympathetic but said serving Pepsi products saves them $10,000 a year. Wow! I said they'd save that much on me alone. They get more variety with Pepsi products besides the savings. I told him it was not a deal breaker for me, I'd come anyway and have the Diet Dr. Pepper. He said, "I'll tell you what---I will get a 12 pack of Diet Coke and keep it in the walk-in, just for you. When you come in, just mention Sage, and they'll get it for you." How cool is that? Who is spoiled?  First I have my own set of glassware at The Club for my soda and now private stock of Diet Coke at Metro. Judy said the bad part of this was that the 12 pack wouldn't last very long there. That was funny, too, but actually people move in and out of the Diner so quickly, the 12 pack might last about 4 visits, if they serve us fast enough!

This is a full month!

Facebook has multiple status updates regarding pink ribbons and people having pink streaks of color put in their hair for breast cancer awareness. My son said last year, 'Who doesn't know about breast cancer by now?" seeing all the stuff the football players wear to show support. I am not sure how the pink stuff for their uniforms is paid for (guess I could look it up...) and also wonder what happens to the added features at the end of the season. Maybe they can be used again the following October? There are marathons, telethons, and other fund raising events going on, and I have a friend who is instrumental in orchestrating some of these events locally.

Not only is it breast cancer awareness month but also clergy appreciation month. One of my teacher friends in CO posted recently expressing "Teachers get only one day..." of course, in jest. The racks at the grocery store have greeting cards in the end caps so we can acknowledge our pastors, several of the cards being the kind money gets tucked into. Not very subtle, is it?

October is also domestic violence awareness month so many announcements and PSAs abound regarding this problem faced in many families. A friend of mine used to be the main fund raiser for our local  'safe house', and I have donated clothing and other household items to them, including most recently my exercise bike! 5 years ago they got plenty of stuff from me after the Great Flood, and my friend was glad to deliver the items for me.

Other things being recognized this month include shelter dogs, Apple Jacks cereal, cookies (yay!), country ham (yay!), drums, pizza, seafood, and various medical conditions including lupus, diabetes, and pharmacists (not a condition actually). And it's vegetarian awareness month which is interesting to me. "How do you know when someone is a vegetarian?" "Within 10 minutes they will tell you..." After I heard this 'joke' I paid attention and sure enough, it's true! Even one of our waiters at Chili's felt like telling us he is vegetarian. We did not ask him, he volunteered this info. Not a good sales pitch at a place like Chili's. He might be happier across the street at Sweet Tomatoes.
People who have lost children are encouraged to place a lighted candle in their window on the 15th of October for awareness purposes. I have done this in the past in December. Compassionate Friends chooses the 2nd Sunday in December for this. My friend, Cindy, gave me a battery-operated candle just for this reason many years ago. I can't say I always remember to get it out. I'll be home this year at the time so will make an effort to do so.

All of these plus the many others celebrated this month are worthwhile causes and issues. The one, though, which has basically swamped my 'feed' on Facebook is in regard to recognizing those who have had miscarriages, stillbirths, or had infants die. Oh my....I know so many folks who have had miscarriages and even stillbirths, some whose babies lived only minutes or were delivered already dead, having died in utero. I am not sure what exactly can be achieved by having an awareness month. Those who have these losses in their lives are well aware, as are their families and friends. Perhaps it is meant to educate folks on how to care for those who've had such a loss.

One link I clicked took me to a site where one could order greeting cards just for such situations, a couple of which even included street language to offer your sentiments to someone whose lost a child. I am so thankful no one saw fit to get me such a card. Is it that difficult to come up with a few words to express sympathy or sorrow to a person? Some might say it is, but not having to resort to vulgar or profane printed cards. No one is that socially inept, are they? Perhaps they are if they buy these cards!

Busy time with church family Part II

Sunday was busy enough with church stuff, and Monday was no different. The morning started with Bible study, our look at Ephesians which is interesting. We also took a bit of time to talk about the movie "War Room", looking at the good in it besides the 'bad' theology. Only three of us including Pastor had seen it and the others didn't really seem interested in going to see it, but it is important to talk about the pros and cons of such movies.

After Bible study, five of us went to the Dairy Queen for lunch, enjoying their wonderful $5 menu choices. While everyone else had chicken, I had the bacon cheeseburger. The meal includes sandwich, fries, soda, and a small sundae. Quite the feast! I enjoy our social time together so much more and having a sundae at the same time is all the better! In several hours we'd be meeting again for Ladies' Group---almost doesn't pay to go home sometimes!

I spent my afternoon on the computer and just as I was settling in to watch The Five with Linda, I got a text message from Terri. She wondered if I was eating dinner before or after the meeting, as she wanted to grab a bite. I am flexible if nothing else so excused myself from Linda and our shared TV news show and met Judy C. and Terri at Cracker Barrel. We hadn't been there in months, Judy not even remembering coming there to eat with the Over 50 Group. I have pictures to prove it!

While waiting for the ladies to arrive, I had a chance to visit with one of the waiters who used to take of me when I came with a different group years ago. I must tell Judy J. that Seth is still working there, as is his sister. It was nice that he recognized me and came over to chat for a bit. He is looking to become a police officer but life got in the way so he has put that on hold. I wished him the best and hope he can recognize his goals sooner rather than later.
Gretchen, Judy, me, Fausto, Julaine, Ethel, Darwin, Hilda, Bonnie, Donna, (Betty is out of frame), Rachel, Linda, Jackie, and Twila at Cracker Barrel.

I ordered the meatloaf meal, lunch sized portion, and believe it or not, ate the entire thing. Plus a biscuit! As I told the ladies, it was my funeral meal I was enjoying, as these items are what I have requested to be served to my potential guests for my reception afterward. I got a small paper bag into which to place two extra biscuits left on the plate. No sense them going to waste (waist). We had to hustle a little bit to get from Cracker Barrel over to church, hoping the traffic wasn't too bad. Judy ran into some trying to get from home to CB. We made it in good time.

We had a small number for our meeting but accomplished much. Afterwards we sat around talking and ended up roaring with laughter as we shared stories involving outhouses and public bathrooms. I told the story of Timmy and the automatic toilet at Publix which caused him to jump off of it. Many of the ladies had a story to share and we sure had some great laughs. Thanks to Betty for making us a tasty dessert to snack on, cheesecake brownies, I believe. She is ever so handy in the kitchen!

Busy time with church family

Yesterday, besides football, was Bible study and worship. Our preschool teacher/director, Michael, lead the Bible study and it was wonderfully interactive. Pastor was in with the Sunday school families which no longer meet at church, all home-school Sunday school now. The families were getting instruction for the month. Not sure how many were there for this. After Bible study I went into church and waited for Justin to arrive, bringing me an attendance sheet which I needed. Unfortunately, when I text messaged him, he was still asleep and forgot to grab it for me. I had to take the roll freehand. Good thing I know who people are!

After church we had a cake fellowship celebrating a couple confirmed during the service. Another lady was accepted into membership again, having been a member many years ago. Pastor had asked me to take the pictures so I had to stick around after the service rather than head to the restaurant. Judy and Terri were counting the offering immediately after the service, and Betty had a fellowship meeting with Mike S. We all had something to do! Justin left us and went to Jesse's and then to Dave & Busters to watch the Jaguar game. (Groan, what a terrible ending!)

Eventually some of us finished our duties and headed to Chili's. Mike and Betty came behind us, as Terri and her sister, Gayle, who joined us for worship today, were meeting a friend for a movie so we had to keep things moving along. Whew!  They got their food and ate as Mike's and Betty's meals arrived. Michael was going to tease Mike and order for him, as Mike had requested. They have a burger on the menu called the "Old Timer" he was going to order for his friend, which, the more I thought about it, the funnier it was. I gave Michael permission to say something one time/one day as Mike just celebrated a round numbered birthday. He is 10 years my junior so not officially an Old Timer! Michael ordered a regular burger for him, but we still had a chuckle over it.
At church, I had taken a piece of the cake but ate only half of it, carrying the rest home with me. From Chili's I got two to-go boxes---one for my meal and one for the extra chips left on the table to eat during the game. On top of them I carried my piece of cake. As I walked toward my building, the cake started to slide off and I caught it against my blouse and purse strap. Saved the cake!!! I was able to wipe the frosting from my blouse and eat my smushed cake later on, what was left of it!

I had a jar of beer cheese dip in the cabinet to enjoy with the chips, but I simply could not open the jar. Even tapping on the tile floor wouldn't help. I was fine without it, but sort of had my mouth set for it, you know? Justin opened it for me when he got home from watching that terrible football game. I didn't use any of it then because of our good dinner I was making. Hope my chips hold up until I am ready!

A day of celebration

If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times, no exaggeration, “It’s hard to be a Jaguar fan…” Man, oh man, they make us work hard to be supporters. Today’s game was lost in overtime, three times in field goal range, three times missed. Ugh! The team’s longtime kicker, Josh Scobee, was released this season and a new guy brought in. I wonder if tomorrow he will still be alive (kidding!) and will he still have a position on the team. Those who are more fervent fans than am I are beside themselves. I feel badly for my friend, Gretchen, who is the equivalent of the #1 fan, as she is likely crushed, like the team is. It took every part of me to not call her this afternoon. She probably needs to be alone. As Justin says, “At least we have the Packers…” Yes, yes we do!

But there was cause for rejoicing and a bit of weeping today. I called my mom this afternoon to get the scoop on the day’s events at my home church, First German Lutheran. They were giving thanks for 160 years of the Lord’s mercy on the congregation with special worship and music, choirs, and a guest preacher. The president of the Seminary preached, using the theme of memories. I don’t know what his Biblical reference was for the sermon, Mom only told me the gist of it. She has been there all her 90 years and this was a special day for her as well.

My sister, Lynn, is in the choir for the church so was in the choir loft for the service. She instructed my sister, Jill, to have tissues ready for one of their anthems, and they were needed. The FG choir sang “Now the Light Has Gone Away” in German. I weep now writing about it. What is so special about that hymn, other than its text, is that one of the former pastors whom Mom loved dearly, had sung that for her at his going away party. Justin and I happened to be there for this event and there were no dry eyes at our table, and I dare say, in the room. She had scolded him for accepting the Call, reminding him that he promised to sing that at her funeral, in German. Since he likely wouldn’t be there for her funeral, he sang it for her before he left. And she got to hear it again today. Lynn said she did okay singing in rehearsal, but today was a deal breaker, especially after hearing the sermon about memories. Wow, just wow!

When Justin got home after watching the Jaguar game with Jesse, we were standing in the kitchen, talking. I told him how FG celebrated 160 years today and he said, “Oh, wow!” (we say wow a lot!). Then I told him that Grandma had a special treat when the choir sang. He asked, “Did they sing Grandma’s song in German?” How in the world did he know?? He just guessed it out of the air, saying he didn’t read it anywhere, just guessed it. I believe him, because I didn’t read it anywhere either and am more apt to spot something like that on my sites than is he. He just blew me away! Anyway, I told Mom I was going to write to Pastor Hahm and let him know about this, and she told me to let him know that she thinks about him often. I did just that!

Justin and I ate at home this evening, enjoying some country-style ribs which I popped in the oven when I got home from Chili’s. I sprinkled them with dehydrated onions, salt and pepper, and poured a partial can of dark ale with them. Justin got this beer for his birthday and does not care for it, so we are using it for cooking. My neighbor, Kay, was over for a little while and she said the smell of our dinner was driving her crazy. The house smelled amazing from it. Part way through the roasting process I put some of Justin’s homemade bbq sauce on them. We served the ribs with egg noodles and both were delicious. I added some of the ale to the water used for boiling the noodles, too. The rest went down the drain, phew! It smells much better in the roaster than in the sink!

200 Items to Throw Away

My good friend, Stephanie, has a marvelous project "things to do when I'm retire" she is tackling in her home. Presently she is doing a drawer-a-day (minimum) and is finding things she has long forgotten about, enjoying the project. When I saw this list posted by another blogger, Stephanie came to mind, and so did my own house!

As you look ahead at this list I want you to remember two things:
1.)  Remember you can sell, donate, recycle or throw away.  Knowing that I’m allowing someone else to enjoy my things makes it easier for me to let them go.
2.) Keep things that make you feel good.  If it doesn’t make you feel happy when      you look at it, get rid of it quickly.  Surround yourself with things you enjoy.

Now on to the list:
1.  Old product boxes (Apple products, TV, etc.)
2.  Hangers from the dry cleaners
3.  Plastic hangers from the store
4.  Expired make up
5.  Half-finished projects…you know the one!
6.  Magazines
7.  Old emery boards (buy a nice glass one and be done with those scratchy things!)
