No more running to the window

This evening there was a scheduled launch for SpaceX, a launch postponed a couple times already this past week because of the high wind conditions. Tonight would have been perfect, nice and clear. But, nope, twice the sequence was interrupted after I'd run to the windows to watch. Oh, for goodness sake!  The last time was only seconds to lift off when the launch was aborted. I think that the first pause was because there were commercial ships in the lane where the booster would be coming down. Once that cleared, the launch was attempted again but something in the computer shut it down (I think). They are going to try again tomorrow.

The day began with Bible study and worship, followed by fellowship. Judy had a meeting right after church and I was standing by to help with clean-up if her meeting ran long. Fortunately, the meeting went quickly so several of us chipped in to get things cleared away in order for us to get to lunch. I did have a wonderful ham salad sandwich Judy had made plus a cookie, to hold me over.

Terri wasn't joining us for lunch today as she was going to her sister's house for a birthday party. She was dropping Gretchen off at home on her way through since Gretchen's drivers were going to someone else's birthday lunch and it just worked out for Terri to take her home. I'd eaten 6 meals with Terri in a week's time so I guess she was excused! Chili's was busy as could be, but we were blessed to have a veteran waitress take care of us, one who knew our idiosyncrasies! Erica made sure we had soda refills and chips 'n salsa, but also had to wait in line for our turn. It seemed like the staff had too many newbies on for such a busy day, and Mike made sure to tell Erica that. She'd been working in the bar most of the time now but she got pulled out to wait tables. Might have been a bit rusty but she was getting caught up quickly!

Justin and I shared the 2 for $20 deal of which we brought home 4 chicken crispers and two orders of mashed potatoes. That sounds like at least two more meals to me, which is quite a deal for $20. Erica treated us to our soft drinks today, too, which kept our bills lower. Worth the delay in getting our meals, if you ask me.

Linda and I got to chat this late afternoon because our TV show was on, very rare to have it on Sunday. The Five had an election special show following the primary in SC and coming up in TX, and elsewhere. She got good news today at church---their pastor returned a Call he had to another congregation. Whew! When I talked to my mom, she said she just knew he wasn't going to go. Still it was good to hear this news, for FG and for Mom and Linda, etal.

What a blast!

Justin had to go to work this morning, the end of his 'winter break' to finish up some sites not gotten to during the week. His co-worker was out sick a couple days plus they lost all of Wednesday when a huge storm was predicted, but never came. It blew apart in the night and never re-gathered. I'd hate to be the one making these decisions for their days, based upon weather forecasts.

I was lolling in bed, watching the news, when my phone went off. Terri was wondering if I was up for breakfast. Yes, I might not be up and out of bed, but I sure can be! She was still at home so I had plenty of time to make myself ready to meet over at Grumpy's. Hadn't been there since yesterday!

The parking lot was packed, with several spaces being occupied by large motorcycles. Terri got there before I did, oddly enough, since I live so close. She met me at my car as I pulled in, offering to park my car on the grass for me so I didn't have to go so far. I assured her I could do it myself, appreciate the offer of course, and she went in to get our name on the list. I had to drive up the little hill, past a rescue squad parked up there, as well. By the time I got parked and walked over to the restaurant Terri was coming back out. We parked ourselves on the bench to wait for our name to be called.

Terri was planning to meet someone who had some baby stuff to donate. Two young ladies at the JAX Pace Center are expecting so Terri will see to it they get these donated items which includes equipment as well as clothing. This meeting would take place when the lady's baby woke up so we had plenty of time to eat. They seated us at the 'romantic table', a two top back in the corner. The opening to the other dining room was behind us so it is not confining, just a bit teeny. We managed nicely!

Terri's donater arrived so we went out to our cars. Terri transferred the items to her car as I headed out to Wal*Mart to pick up prescriptions. I usually only go there when I need my medications filled, every three months, with occasional visits in between. Today I had to speak with the tech because the price the text msg I got from Wal*Mart was far too high. When I called to speak to someone yesterday, the lady told me my insurance had expired. I didn't even have that kind of insurance so I was glad to talk with someone in person today and see what was what. The nice lady told me my particular medication was no longer on the $4 list but did find one that was. I have to ask my doctor to call it in but did take a month's worth of the original one, because of being out of them. I am not a fan of this kind of thing.

The afternoon was spent at my desk, not working on taxes, while watching "HOUSE". At a certain point I moved to my bed and was watching the news, having a handful of Cheetos to hold me over until dinner. Around 6:30 I got a text msg from Terri that OJ and she were going to dinner and asked me join them.  I jumped in the car to meet them at the Outback. She messaged me that Michael and Judy were coming, too, which is just a blast. When I got to Outback, the lot was full, and I drove around and around to find a space. Every time I saw one open up, by the time I got there, someone else got it. Terri had found a place, as did Michael...So as I circled, Terri messaged me that it was an hour's wait so we decided to go to 4 Rivers instead.

We all got to 4 Rivers at the same time and did have to stand in line a bit which is not unusual. Judy went to save us seats at a table (every where was bustling tonight!), and it was after 7:00 pm. I still have gift cards to use here so was glad they chose 4 Rivers for our dinner. Given the hour, the place was emptying out and was not so crowded which allowed us to sit and talk for a while. This was twice in a week that I got to see OJ and eat with her. I am so loving this!!  They all got a kick at how I packed up my to-go dishes right away when I got to the table, putting the containers in the bag. Terri wondered if I wasn't going to eat something, but I assured her I would eat all my meat. And did so! Love that brisket!

"Hello, Mary Lew, Good-Bye Heart"

Not long after I moved into The Palace I began to participate in the water exercise classes at The Club. In those days, the classes were held at 8:15 a.m. in the teen's pool, shallower in the first half which is good for non-swimmers. At that hour of the morning, that pool was in the shade of my building so it was bit chilly. But, we were troopers! I was the youngest, with several being a good 20 years my senior. They did not want to listen to me complain about the cold---ha, ha!
Last summer in the teen pool, tight quarters!

I am thinking Randy is the only one besides me, I think, from the original group. He is in his 70's and has some dementia going on so am not sure how much longer he'll be coming to the class. Anyway, another of the originals was Mary Lew, a long-time Club member. She was a florist by trade and was called upon to help decorate in The Club for special occasions like Mother's Day, Easter, the big holidays, etc. She would also join the fun on Wednesday nights, occasionally coming for Happy Hour. She was a low-talker, I know I've mentioned this in the past. The room was already noisy and those with hearing problems had a dilly of a time hearing what Mary Lew had to say.

She loved books and would spend time before our classes reading and basking in the sun. More than once she suggested our group bring our books and share them but somehow it never happened. She let me borrow one of hers, and it was such a good read. 'I Feel Bad About My Neck', written by screen writer/director Nora Ephron. It was about getting older and the things which go with it. It was funny as well as reflective about our lives. Loved it!  That year for Christmas Mary Lew gave me another of Nora's books. I was so glad that she told me she had a gift for me so I was ready with one for her. I gave her a special bookmark, but can't recall what else. The book she gave me is on the table in my living room, as I write this.

A couple years ago Mary Lew was in a car accident while taking her daughter for cancer treatments. It was not her fault but unfortunately she ended up on the hospital for a couple of weeks with a head injury. Mary Lew never came back to class for several reasons, one including not being happy with how her legs looked in a suit. She was teeny tiny to start with but I guess she got smaller yet and felt funny. Once or twice she did come to join us for a lunch which was nice. It was just not the same without her.
Here is our group from 2012, at Basketique Tea Room. Mary Lew is seated on the left, with Randy next to her. My hand is on Randy's shoulder, and then Marlena, her mom, and Sisti. Back row is Pat A., Pat G., Ollavan, me, Susie, Maggie O., Ina, Lynn, Rita, Lee, Sherry, and Helen.

Mary Lew passed away a week ago, and today was her funeral service. The reception afterward was held at The Club. I had let everyone in our class know, those who knew her prior to two years ago, so they could attend the service and/or reception, or submit memories to the daughter who is assembling a memory book about her mom. Sadly, I was the only one from the class who showed up, except for Marlena, who was there as a guest and not an employee today. I got to meet Mary Lew's family members and many of her friends. The friends who were florists went all out for her, using Mary Lew's own containers to decorate the tables and every available surface with floral arrangements. I am kicking myself for not taking pictures, but I didn't feel right doing so. I hope someone else did! Oh, my! It was splendid, and Mary Lew would have been honored and pleased to see it. Good-bye, Mary Lew!

Quiet day otherwise

Today was Bible study at Victory, finishing our look at Titus. We are working our way through the epistles which began with Timothy. Next we are moving right into Philemon, which won't take us long at all! We had a nice group today, three married couples, which I think is just marvelous, not all ladies like ours is at GS. It's great that couples can do this together during the week.
Me with my good friend, Lee, at The Club

I was thinking on my ride home about my friend, Lee, whom I miss dearly. She moved away three years ago, first to CA and now living downstate in the Sarasota area. We used to have the best talks, hours and hours either in the pool or on the side, or over a meal. One time she said something which was thought-provoking. She said she doesn't like the term 'best friend' because that puts all the rest of the friends in a certain pecking order. This was not something I'd ever considered and really made me re-consider my word choices. I would hate to put someone on the spot and give me a ranking in their life so this gave me incentive to no longer use that descriptive when talking about my friends. Lee is still with me, as it were, though many miles away!

Angie and Linda greeting me!

This lovely photo awaited me this morning when I checked my Facebook account. These two ladies sent me their greetings from the Wellness Center. Really got my day off to a marvelous start!

Today was my Republican Women's meeting at The Club. The lady who usually provides the invocation and offers something worthy of consideration was absent. It was announced that her son and his family showed up at her home after midnight with only the clothes on their backs, having escaped their burning home. Oh no!

It wasn't long and a collection basket was being passed around into which those gathered could make a donation to help this displaced family. It was moving, sort of quiet, as folks were visibly affected by this situation and were swift to lend a hand.  Plans are to get them a WalMart gift card with which they can get basic needs met and so the young daughter could have school clothes so she wouldn't miss too much. Surely other help will be coming to them but in the meantime their family and we can and did lend a hand.

Facebook has come up with a new gimmick for people to click on after reading someone's post. At first there was only an imoji or graphic for LIKE which I would use with abandon, indicating I'd read their post. Now the developers have added a graphic for laughter, love, shock, sorrow, and anger, besides the thumbs up for LIKE. Thus far, I have only used LIKE but all the imoji pop-up and get in the way, pushing for use. I won't do it! Stubborn that way. I'd like a button or graphic that indicates I've been there and read their posting, not putting a grade on it. I know I am in the minority on this so I'll simply note my distaste here and leave it at that.

Tonight is midweek Lenten worship. I wonder if Justin will be done working in time to go with me or if he'll be up to it. Usually he's pretty bushed when he gets home, heads right for his bed after getting showered and his clothes into the washer. His legs are weary and his bones ache. Even though the mowers he uses are ride-on, there is quite a lot of jarring and bouncing going on. We shall see!

Over 50 Lunch Bunch and more

This morning I got a call from Judy C. regarding a change in plans for our trip to Mandarin for the Over 50 Lunch Bunch. She was going to drive Betty and me to St. Mary's Seafood but she had gotten a call from a dear friend who needed her help. I agreed to drive Betty over, as she is afraid of the bridge. Terri let me know she was coming and bringing OJ with her. We had a large group of people, about 20. The service was good, which amazes me with this many people and orders to prepare. Another group was in there with us, and prior to their eating, began to sing "Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow". Our group joined in, and it was lovely. Gives me the chills even yet, thinking about all the voices united in song! Was this a violation of fellowship? The other group applauded our joining them. I wonder who they were...
Terri and OJ sat across from Gretchen and me, with Betty at the end of our table. OJ was waving the peace sign at me. Our group was stretched along a wall of booth/tables so we couldn't really talk with everyone
Terri took this picture of Gretchen and me as waited for our meals. Gretchen is smiling as best she can because she has a broken bridge and fears it falling out if she opens her mouth more! She is a hoot!
I took this picture of Betty and Gretchen
Here is the rest of the group, all the way to the end. At one point, as a joke, Linda H. called me to say 'hello' from halfway down the booth (pink shirt, snow white hair). The gesturing hands belong to Judy J. Gotta love the good turnout for this event each month but makes it hard to find places large enough to accommodate and serve us. This is our 2nd time here and both times, excellent service and food.

I had a delightful meal and time with the folks at this lunch, getting Betty back and forth safely across the bridge. I paced myself with what I ordered because Nancy W. and I had plans to dine at The Club for dinner. Originally we were going on Casual Grille Night Thursday but she had something else planned. Instead, she had her birthday dinner on The Club tonight, and I used a gift certificate my neighbors gave me to pay for my meal. She ate both the appetizers that came with our meals for me. When the waiter brought out our tiny scoops of lemon sorbet to cleanse our pallets, Nancy said, "Oh, good! Something she likes!" I also did like my prime rib, baked potato and brocolli. Brandon boxed up my salad automatically but Nancy didn't take it so I brought it home for Justin with the rest of my leftovers. I'll have a dandy meal or two from them this weekend!

Trying my best to not be....

....a single-issue friend! I have been noticing on the media sights and FB how folks are posting their wishes for a swift end to the political season so they can preserve their friendships. Yes, this sort of thing tends to separate the men from the boys, or the friends from acquaintances. There are people with whom I am friends and can discuss just about anything under the sun, except religion. With others, we can talk about religion and church, but some other things are better left not talked about at all. One could think everything is hunky dory and you enjoy the time spent together or the connections made via the Internet, until it comes to politics. Then, all bets are off!

My home state went through some tempestuous political contests (in the truest form of the word!) a few years ago regarding their governor and other elected officials. The state capitol was overtaken and occupied and things were quite ugly, and embarrassing to me, since I like to brag on my home state from time to time. During the recalls and other electoral stuff, I had to literally shut my eyes when reading others postings. When normally I enjoyed the things they had to say, this situation brought out a side of them which was not pleasant. Lack of information or getting bad information, not checking the facts, getting 'news' from around the water cooler or in the factory lunch room wasn't making for quality postings. Yikes!

Some of those people were unfriended by me, I didn't really need their names padding my number of 'friends', and I never looked back. Others I miss hearing about and from, while others I am okay not having around or hearing from. I wonder if anyone has blocked or unfriended me for cause...Normally I don't post much about politics on my own FB page and am careful about what I say on other's. I sure would not wish to come off as being dumb or foolish, considering myself fairly well up to speed on what's going on the realm of politics and current events. And mostly I try to not be angry, which seems to be a popular theme this political season.

What other topic would I expect to unfriend people, stop communicating with them? Fashion? Finance? Restaurant choices? Likely not, as none of those affect the survival of our nation (except for finance, I suppose) and the preservation of our Constitution and form of governance. People simply must do their homework, study the information available about the candidates, evaluate and compare their positions, and make an educated choice. Using anger as the basis for voting for a person regardless of their stance on issues is just foolishness and is downright dangerous for our nation. People who think that politics is ugly now need to simply look back in the history of our nation's politics to see how ugly things were even back then, minus the TV cameras and Internet! This ain't nothing yet!

Friends at the tables

This morning we had Bible study and worship, as usual. Our study is of the minor prophets but it is a bit slow getting going. I'm sure it will pick up as we get into it. We have a family joining us now from the church in Keystone Heights, with two of their kids attending our Sunday school. That is so nice, great to have more kids!

As usual, following worship, our little group headed to Chili's to have lunch together. Today again we welcomed Judy's granddaughter, Victoria, who also worshiped with us. She is not a fan of Chili's but comes along anyway. When her parents are in town, we eat elsewhere to comply with Victoria's preference. I personally don't care where we dine, just so we're together. Another special treat was having Gretchen join us, thanks to Terri's persuasion. Terri promised to take her home after lunch and Gretchen agreed. Yay for us! Because she was with us, we were all on our best behavior---yeah, right!  She is the champion straw wrapper blower, she started that whole thing with us!

After lunch I had to hustle on home to get to work on my dinner making, since we were having guests join us tonight. I got started with cutting up the potatoes and without too much ado got two casseroles of escalloped potatoes with ham ready for the oven. I made one smaller portion without onions since Stephanie is vehemently opposed to them. The larger casserole included the onions which I also sliced. I can't believe how quickly I was able to assemble our dinner and get it into the fridge. Had enough time to rest for a bit, which I needed after standing in the kitchen.

The reason a rest was helpful was because I had to attend a Board meeting at 4:00 pm to decide the course of action as regards hiring a management company for the building. The BOD had interviewed a couple of agencies and today were choosing which one to hire. We need this since we have not enough people on the BOD and no one to serve as the secretary or treasurer. Both are required, obviously, and needed to remain in compliance with State condo laws. What a pain! In order for it to be cost effective and not cause an increase in our monthly fees, some compromising of services has to be made. I can't say too much about this because I was unwilling to step in and take a seat on the Board, though I have been asked and asked. It would just not be good for my spirit, but then again, neither is paying increased fees!

Justin took care to put our dinner in the oven at the appointed hour, allowing some extra cooking time due to having two casseroles going at once. Besides our potatoes and ham I made green beans in the steamer, to which Justin added garlic butter. Our guests, Stephanie, Jean, and Erica, arrived and we got everyone seated, and watered. My sweet neighbor, Kay, had delivered a bag of ice cubes to me after the Board meeting. She is my supplier! I know the ladies are water drinkers so I made sure my Brita was ready to go and put ice in the glasses for us all.

Stephanie's casserole cooked through but the larger dish didn't fare as well, with some of the potatoes a bit raw yet. Nuts! Even with baking it a bit longer than usual, there was rawness! Jean didn't say anything about it, but I did. Erica was not feeling well and we knew that before she arrived. Tonight she did eat a teeny bit of Jell-O (I got up early to make it this a.m.!) and some ham with a taste of potato. Her grandma said that is the most she's eaten in days so I am glad she did try at least. She is seeing the doctor this coming week to see what's going with her, and hope she gets answers.
Jean and Erica made our dessert, a raisin custard pie, one of my favorites. Oh, yum! The pie was amazing!

Stephanie knows how I feel about raisin pie. The crust was homemade, too, with Jean walking Erica through how to make it. After we ate our dessert, we sat at the table and talked for a bit before the ladies, having had a long day already, decided to head for home. Before coming to my house, they attended the Victory Lutheran softball game. It ended up being a scrimmage, with the other team borrowing people from the Victory team in order to play. It was such a nice day, didn't hurt a bit to be out watching a ball game. And then they came to my house! I loved our time together, and am glad we did this before Jean has to head back home to WI. Her visit this time has been much more fun since Stephanie retired last year. Those ladies and their yarn creations, love to shop for yarn and love to make things from the yarn. It's great for them, and others!

Alligator dreams!

Oh, boy! This morning I was so glad to wake up and badly needed to stay that way, even though it was too early to be up. Some of those dreams just don't need revisiting. Last night I heard some disturbing information and I am sure this affected my wee hours dreaming. In the dream I was floating on the raft out in the river and was suddenly in the sights of an alligator. My arms were paddling madly but no matter what, I made no headway from the approaching gator. Somehow I had no oars or paddles to help me, but I did have silverware with me. I was throwing forks and knives like a madwomen to keep that gator at bay. Thankfully I woke up and was glad to be so!!!

Justin and I enjoyed a nice lunch at 4 Rivers, gotta love their brisket. The next time I go, I think I earn a free sandwich with my frequent shopper points. Yay for me! I am still using my birthday gift cards from 4 Rivers so every time is free for me.  Once home again, from my desk I could enjoy an abundance of river traffic, lovely sailboats and even a few fisherman out there. Right outside the window were a couple of pelicans, which I find most delightful. Only in the past couple of years did I see pelicans over here, and I am okay with them being here. They make less noise than do the geese!

As I am lying here on my bed and checking FB postings, many are checking in from entertainment venues in the area. They run the range from a Broadway presentation of "The Phantom of the Opera" to monster truck shows. Must be Jacksonville! Some others attended the symphony, tickets I declined when offered by my neighbor, Patti. I just stayed home to watch the primary results from South Carolina and Nevada tonight and am not being very entertained at all by the results. This is getting frightening. Just think----I could be at a monster truck show while Rome burns...

Accidents happen

Yesterday after Bible study,  I met my friend for an enjoyable lunch at Metro Diner. After I was home for a bit, I decided to give my mom a call. In the past I would call her on Thursdays as I drove to Victory, but ever since there was a terrible accident on the Bridge with a family killed, I have decided to not do that anymore. So now when I call her, I have no deadline to end the call like I did when going to the study. Mom was resting in her chair when I called her after she'd dusted that morning. Wears a person out! She told me about my sister, Kerry, coming for an overnight visit and all the good food Kerry brought with her.

We talked for a bit before Mom asked if I'd heard that Lori had fallen in her bathroom. NO!, I had not and I was terribly upset to hear this. Lori had called Mom a few days ago and told her about it, the fall occurring over the weekend prior. When I was done talking with Mom I called Lori to see how she was. Lori was at work but could talk, and told me about her fall.

Apparently she had a taken a shower and was stepping out of the tub. She is unsure exactly how it happened but didn't lift her foot high enough and down she went on the floor. She hit with a mighty thud but her hubby didn't hear it. Lori was able to get up on her own, no harm and no foul, but has now bruising from her thigh to above the ankle on one leg. It didn't stop her from going with her lady friends that evening, she is a trouper.

I just hate it when I hear that family or friends have a fall, no matter what age they are. Lori said if she was older she might have broken a bone but she IS four years older than me. She said she had some padding on her legs to buffer her but I told her she did not have much (not like mine!). My other sisters have bird legs like their grandma and mama, I don't know where mine came from! I am so glad Lori is okay, though, none the worse for the wear. Guess she can wait a while to get one of those emergency pendants, especially since David is there to help her!

Unreasonableness

This morning I went to Bible study at Victory, good traffic and no problems. I am always so thankful when I get there, and then thankful to get back home again. I met Pastor H. as I walked up and noticed he was dressed somewhat differently than usual. He had on a plaid shirt, a sweater vest, and a blazer over the top of that, plus jeans. Hmmm...not his normal Thursday attire. After he greeted me he told me Cary would be taking the class today as he was flying to MKE for a meeting. Oh, okay...he needed the layers for the cold!

Dawn was already inside, having a quilt she is working on spread out in the space between the chancel and the first row of chairs. This is the best place for her to do this as she needs space with no foot traffic. Cary had already made the coffee when Harold and Lucy arrived. Harold scolded me for not bringing doughnuts but before I could say anything, Cary jumped in to report Rita was bringing doughnuts. In fact, her car broke down at the doughnut shop and Cary's wife was picking her up and bringing Rita and the doughnuts to class. Poor Rita but yay for Nancy going to get her!

We had full tables, including a guest from Martin Lutheran College, Kate, who is on her way to Leesburg where she'll meet up the president of the college to do a presentation to a group about MLC. It was great to have her as part of class. Every seat was taken, a good situation to have. We are studying Titus which is a great follow-up to the book of Timothy.

My friend, Kathy H., and I were finally able to get together for lunch. I got to choose where we went, picking Metro Diner. This was her first visit, strangely enough. I arrived first and signed in at the host station. Another lady came in behind me, with her daughter, and put her name on the list. She was disgruntled that the host wouldn't seat her until the rest of her group arrived. I waited to the side for Kathy to get there and was fine with it. This lady was not happy and asked to see a manager. While 'we' waited for him, I talked to her about the policy, me being jolly about it. Given the busyness of this place and the rapid turnover, certainly they don't want tables held up, in her case a 5 top, waiting for the rest of her party for 15 minutes. I felt she was being unreasonable in her upset, unhappily waiting for her group to arrive and then being seated. Try I as I might, I couldn't persuade her to be okay with it. Finally Kathy arrived and we were seated. This lady and her group, once they got there, were seated, ate, and left before Kathy and I were finished. What the heck was all the fuss about??!

Kathy enjoyed her meal, as did I, and she treated me for my birthday. Yes, I am still milking the birthday! Kathy and her mom couldn't make it to my party. She gave me a gift besides paying for my meal, and I am thankful for the Chili's gift card and picture frame. Her family is gathering for her niece's wedding for which everyone is on call to help organize. Her brother is unmarried so Kathy is helping as best she can, like a mother of the bride role, to help her brother and his daughter pull off this wedding. I wish them wonderful weather and no drama. Is that too much, is that unreasonable?

That was a nightmare

This was the glorious sunrise we were met with this morning

Today I finally tackled the ominous task of signing up for the VyStar online checking service. Yes, I was already enrolled in this but they have instituted a new computer system and everyone has to go through this ritual. I'd heard from others how awful it was, having the system go down under the pressure of people trying to get re-enrolled, etc. Obviously I was reluctant to take care of this but it was getting time to pay some bills so I had to dive right in. It only took two phone calls to customer service to get it done. When I was done, I needed a drink!

My drink of choice was a milk shake which Brenda N. and I enjoyed after our nice lunch at Steak 'n Shake. It is always great to see her and spend time together. She comes over on her lunch hour and we pack much into our time together. And, later, we enjoy our milk shakes which we take with us. I cannot eat the meal and have the shake at the same time---it's either one or the other!

On the way home, I stopped at Winn Dixie to get what I needed to make cookies for at church tonight. I took the easy route and bought the break apart cookies which I baked at home. Easier yet would have been buying pre-baked cookies so I am good. Technically, I took home-baked cookies tonight and am proud of it!

For my dinner after church I made myself a nice pork sandwich using the remains of the apple-flavored loin Justin made. Oh, my! Was that delicious! Justin had eaten already when I came home, working late and too tired to do anything except go to bed. Poor guy, right back into the thick of things!

History repeats itself

I just had to laugh today, right off the bat. The Facebook Memory thing popped up with a post from last year when Justin checked in for us from Grumpy's because I'd forgotten my phone at home. He wrote: "Mom left her phone at home. People might think she didn't get to eat today if I don't check in for her." And that is why, folks, I check in on FB. People will become concerned that I am starving nearly to pieces if I do not!

The next funny thing was Terri messaged me to go meet for breakfast---yes---at Grumpy's! History is repeating itself today. And what a lovely breakfast it was, too. Sometimes I fear that the Metro Diner will hurt Grumpy's business but so far I haven't noticed much decline. Saturdays at Grumpy's are still standing room only. I know there are some who are regulars and just will not venture up the street. I am also a regular but do venture up the street!  And today, I had my phone with me to do my own check-in.
Just looking at them makes my mouth water! I needed an ice cream bar later to soothe my throat after all that garlic!

This evening Justin and I had pizza from Papa Johns. Mine was free because I had bought one on Super Bowl Sunday, plus I added those wonderful garlic knots to the order. Justin likes a thin crust bbq chicken for his pie, and I like the regular crust meat 'n cheese lovers' version. He will finish mine for me during the week, but I got my fair share of the garlic knots.

Eating at home

My boy is a fan of the website Pinterest and other similar sites. From those he finds the most amazing recipes and tonight we will be enjoying one of them. Winn Dixie recently had pork loins on special for $2.00 a pound. The last time I went to get one they were out, promising more were coming. When I went back again, the butcher had to go to the storeroom/cooler and came out with two of them. I took only one, leaving the spare for someone else to buy. Why would they not have them out and available for the taking, though?

Today he is making the recipe which includes slicing the loin along one side and putting apple wedges into the roast. Besides some other ingredients including cinnamon, more apples were placed around the loin in the slow cooker. All day it has cooked and made our house smell wonderful. Can't wait to try it at dinner time, with spiced apples alongside. It sure does smell wonderful.

The other day a Facebook friend and I were discussing the stores in the hometown we came from, including Kresge's. It seems both our moms liked to wear a perfume "Evening in Paris" which I figured was a more 'fancy' scent than Kresge's would sell. I guess it was not! Today Lori sent me this photo she found online of a collection of "Paris" bottles. Wow, does this ever bring back memories. Already back then I liked cobalt glass, and apparently, so did my mom!  This set was available for $185, just imagine if we'd kept all those bottles from back then...

Today the Chef from The Club sent me this video taken yesterday of the St. Valentine's events including exterior shots. At the 1:13 mark he caught a lovely shot of The Palace, so I thought I'd share it here for you to see, as well: http://youtu.be/ubGGK9zQtg4. You can mute the sound to just look at the photoe. Enjoy!

St. Valentine's Day

At first my big, fat idea was to treat Nancy for her birthday on Sunday night. Thankfully, Justin had the presence of mind to consider that might be a bad idea given the fact that it would be St. Valentine's Day. Oops!  Instead, we went tonight, which also proved to be a busy, busy choice. Personally, I love it because it means the restaurant is going to make it, returning to the past glory of what Koko's used to be, and Saigon Tokyo is becoming once again.

A funny thing happened as we entered the restaurant: a young girl called out "Miss Kim!" and grabbed me for a hug. Of course, I hugged her back and told her how nice it was to see her. She said she would tell Grams that she saw me, and she went back to her gaggle of young lady friends. As we sat at our table, it was consuming me---who was that girl????  As it turned out, this group of young ladies sat adjacent to ours so I could keep looking her over, try to connect dots, etc. to remind myself. Nothing! These giggling girls found the bus boy/waiter quite the attraction, which we, in turn, found cute. I hope they left a good tip. Trying to remember who she is and who Grams almost kept me awake all night!

After worship today, our group, sans Terri, went to eat at Chili's. We anticipated it being busy but wasn't too bad. We could use a smaller table today, not needing all that elbow room. I love this time together and appreciate the opportunity to share at least one meal with this group of folks.

"Seinfeld" expert!

Yesterday when Justin and I were at breakfast, about 3/4 of the way through, I realized my earrings were still in my pocket. I had already been talking with the lady next to me, Cindy, and now I was embarrassed that she saw me without them. As I gasped and quickly put them in, he said, "Now I know why people were staring were at you..." Ha, ha!

Horror of horrors---Justice Scalia has died unexpectedly. This is terrible news for the nation, and in particular for those concerned with the fading attention being paid to the Constitution. Antonin was a strict adherer to the Constitution and was well-respected in the legal world and as a Justice for it. I've had some people suggest that the party of the Presidency doesn't really matter, but when you realize that the sitting President does the nominating for the high court, it matters a good deal. We sure don't want to make a mistake made like the current Chief Justice turned out to be.
My little nephews were in a basketball tournament today and my sister, Jill, their auntie, sent me this photo of Manny and Gabe. I can't stop chuckling at the look and posture of Manny---so reluctant to have his picture taken!  But it means much to the aunties and relatives not there to see them play!!!

My friend, Linda M., sent me a link to take a test online regarding "Seinfeld" trivia knowledge. It was a 40 question test and I manged to get 38 correct. What about the two I got wrong? One question I answered incorrectly was asking how many Emmy's the show had won (not really Seinfeld trivia, if you ask me) and the other one, an obvious one, asked which character appeared in every episode. Yes, it was Jerry, but I was thinking of every other character on the show, not even him. Shame on me! Otherwise, I did great on the quiz!

Birthday celebrations and others

This morning, Justin and I went to Metro Diner to have breakfast together. I love that! When he goes back to work full-time I will miss him. But, for now, we take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy one of our favorite restaurants. While we were sitting there, I got a text message from Terri, asking me if I'd like to have lunch at Metro Diner. Sure! Justin told me to put my fork down, so I'd be able to enjoy lunch in a couple of hours. Metro Diner has a policy of deducting a percentage from the tab of anyone who dines twice in a day, and I was able to take advantage of that today! Plus my fridge is stacked with to-go boxes for those days when I dine in.
Facebook offers a feature where postings pop-up from years back on a given day. Today's reminders were of 'Timmy's Forever Birthday' (2011) gathering Justin and I had on the 10th anniversary of his baptism. It was also just a couple weeks past the anniversary of his passing, but we celebrated his baptism date instead. We had a nice group of folks who knew Timmy join us for the gathering and I made up a display of mementos, etc. for the guests to view. The next week I had some of my neighbors over for Happy Hour, a few who had expressed an interest in coming to see our display. Warms my heart to remember this!
This evening a group of Nancy's friends and neighbors gathered to celebrate her upcoming birthday and that of another friend, Jenelle. We went to the same place as last year, Vino Java Brew House. Last year I knew to take my own soda along but this year, I completely forgot. The ladies reminded me that I didn't care for the flavored tea they had so this time I ordered a glass of sangria and nursed it the entire meal!
We were perched up on stools and many of us has tired backs from sitting up there. I was the youngest at the table, and yes, would have loved to sit at a regular height table. This photo shows me, Gail, Jenelle, Nancy, Jeanne, Marsha, Toni (Nancy's classmate/friend) and Sunny.

Nancy and Toni picked me up at my house for the birthday celebration. My card for her included a treat for dinner at our shared favorite place, Saigon Tokyo. I will make every effort to fulfill that promise very soon. On the ride home, Nancy stopped at her place so we could go in and see Hank the Cat. He is such a character, so well trained. He still fetches, begs, rings a bell on command, and gives high fives and tens. For a while he was being trained to use the toilet, but now uses a regular cat box. Remarkable little friend for my friend! Birthday blessings, Nancy!

Something special from my sister

My sister, Lori, sent the following article to me today with the note: "This reminded me of you". I am touched and flattered, and thankful. The passage at the start of the article is on my blog home page as well as part of my bio on Facebook. This passage plus others from Philippians 4 are requested for my funeral service. And, I have, in fact, made friends with people at the airports when traveling, one who is now a FB friend and another via e-mail. It's really not that hard! Please enjoy this from Lori to me:

CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE!

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  Philippians 4:8

"Last weekend, I was stranded in Detroit overnight, having missed a connecting flight.   No, it wasn't caused by the giant snow storm on the East Coast.  It was a case of simple human error. (I'm quick to point out that I am one of those mere mortals that is sometimes responsible for human error.)  Anxiety and upset was contagious.  Everyone was yearning to be on their way toward their destination.  Information wasn't timely or reliable.  Many of us sprinted to the gate of our next flight, hoping against hope that the plane would still be there ... and it wasn't.  Promised gate agents weren't there to smooth changes and arrangements.  All were tired and hungry.  It was a recipe for emotional disaster.  It didn't appear to be a Philippians 4:8 moment!

I'd been given a gift that brought out my best self, a seat mate on the flight from Buffalo to Detroit, who was peaceful, accepting, and calm.  That, too, was contagious.

So, I took a deep breath and made a choice: I was not going to allow any airline to pull me off course from being my best self.  Having no control over anything else - flights, delays, gate changes, missing airline representatives - I did have control over just one thing - my attitude.  I chose to be my best self.

(I'm not proud of this, but I haven't always made that choice.  I have gone to a dark place, expressing anger at people who had not caused the situation and couldn't remedy it.  This time, I wanted to do it differently.  Kids and others were watching. I wear a cross ... and I wanted to provide some evidence that I strive to follow the One who went to the cross for me.)

I connected with a delightful, if shivering, group of fellow travelers, who were waiting for a hotel shuttle.  I observed a young man unzip his suitcase and give a young woman he didn't know, who was flying from South Carolina to LA, clad in a light cotton sweater, his heavy hooded sweatshirt.  I saw others persuade an elderly Jewish woman that it was perfectly safe to ride with our delightful Arab van driver.  Next morning, I watched people, quiet and friendly, ready for the very early van ride back to the airport after just a few hours of sleep.

Then, it was my turn.  In the airport, I got to reassure and calm a frantic young mom, already away from her little kids and husband for a week, that all will be well.  She bought me coffee and we became friends, who could laugh when our gate changed, not once or twice or thrice, but four times, before we actually took off on time.  New friend, coffee, laughter, and a warm memory - that was the gift I received for choosing to focus on what was good in our world that morning."

Ash Wednesday

Oh my goodness, was it a cold start to our day today! We hovered near freezing this a.m. and only got to the low 50's for the high. While I was snuggled yet under my warm blankets and with my heat pad, I received word that four students from Rocky Mountain Lutheran High School would indeed be coming this summer to help our church with Vacation Bible School. Two boys and two girls this time, and yes, the girls will get the guest bedroom. The two guys will end up in the living room, or perhaps, even in the dining room, though neither area affords much privacy. That is a situation they accept when coming here. More pluses than minuses, I guess.

Terri T. and I met for lunch this afternoon at Pengree's. Man, it was busy there! We had to wait a bit for a table to open up, but it was well worth it. I so love their country fried steak, bringing half home with me. I was lucky to get the very last dinner roll. Good thing we didn't want any dessert because that always goes fast from this place, known for their humingbird cake. Not a fan!
Tomorrow would be the anniversary of Timmy's baptism and this arrangement was in the chancel on Sunday. I brought it home tonight after church and decided to keep it here rather take it to the cemetery. It really brightens up the room!

My primary mission today was making a batch of beef vegetable soup to take to church tonight for our Ash Wednesday Soup and Sandwich Supper. Janet B. made toasted cheese sandwiches and several of us brought the soups. We started out with four kettles and had about 20 people. After most had finished eating, two more soups arrived. Talk about a good variety! We were hoping for a better turnout for the supper and for our special worship. Worship had about 30 people which is not bad for midweek service. Let's hope that continues for the next 5 weeks.

Flying Noodles Day!

Today was our mini-reunion of the water exercise group at The Club. When I had talked to the hostess a few days ago there was about a half dozen reservations called in. That was disappointing but we'll take whomever we can get. Much to my delight, the table was beautifully set for 12 people, two folks, a couple, showing up without making a reservation. We had to pull in one chair to accommodate a later arrival. In fact, two ladies were late in arriving due to the power being out in their area and not being able to open the garage door! Glad they were eventually sprung (ha ha) and able to join this fun.
From last month, same people, different seats. Nancy took this picture before the rest of the group arrived.

As some of us were ordering dessert and/or coffee, Pat A. came after an appointment. Maggie O. had been unable to finish her meal so she gave it to Pat so she could eat something, since everyone else was done. In between bites our dear Pat was able to fill us in regarding some recent health problems she has had, and about the recovery of her spouse from esophageal cancer. It was great to get caught up with her, and the others.

I mentioned the ladies who couldn't get out of their garages due to a power outage. Our lights were flickering here at The Palace as well as The Club. It looked like a disco! I feared that the power might go out and then we'd all have cold sandwiches instead of what we'd ordered. Fortunately the electricity was sufficient to make our meals. Nancy W. had the shrimp and worried that the smell would bother me, but there was none. She is so thoughtful. Her big news is that she might have sold her dad's house, and was needing to keep checking her phone for information from those handling her transaction, etc. Talk about pins and needles! I wish her the best outcome, which would be a closed deal ASAP!

PACEing myself

Today I spent much of the morning over at the PACE Center helping Terri T. and her fellow ATT Pioneers with their project of a clothing give away for the students. When I arrived, my neighbor, Kathy M., was there as well as two ladies who have helped the Pioneers with this same project at the Jacksonville PACE Center. Their help was invaluable as they are considered experts as to how to organize, though they might have met their match with Miss Terri. She is highly organized and all went smoothly. We had until noon to get things taken care of because the girls would come into this room for lunch. Again, I am blown away by the generosity of people when it comes to PACE.
There I am over at the racks, trying to find a place to hang some items. I wore my orange outfit to blend in with the Pioneers. In the green sweater is my neighbor, Kathy, who became interested in PACE after attending the breakfast event at my home last October. It was nice to arrive and see her hard at work

Many of the items still bore price tags which we left in place so the girls would see and hopefully appreciate their value. The director mentioned how some of the students have never seen such an event and might be intimidated by it all. It was good they came in for a their break and got to see/watch us ladies putting all the clothing out for them to 'buy' tomorrow with their 'points'. I am sorry I can't be there for that part of the event due to a luncheon. So glad to be able to help in this small way, PACEing myself in order to protect my poor back!
Here is a shot of the room from the back corner where I was set up. We had about 10 ladies doing the sorting and placement of the donated items. Most were from the ATT Pioneers and some other volunteers. I joined Terri and three friends for lunch afterward, at The Pig BBQ. Nice nice ladies!
Not only was clothing donated but also shoes and other fashion accessories. OJ got busy and lined the shoes up under the tables, many of them brand new, and
so so cute!

A Super Bowl Day

Tonight I am all set here watching the Super Bowl with great company---me!  Justin is attending a party at his friend's mom's house but I am quite content to cozy in place to watch, or not watch, the game. Justin thought I should at least watch the commercials but, as I told him, I've seen several of them previewed on the morning news program I watch. What I did enjoy very much was the introduction of the past MVPs of the Super Bowl's 50 years which included many Green Bay Packer players. It was moving to see all these men, many of them now frail with age and their injuries earned on the playing field.
Justin made some dip to take along for his party and I had the ingredients to make the taco queso dip I like so well for myself. It becomes a meal for me, fills me up rather quickly. Justin can no longer enjoy this dip, having made it too often and getting sick of it. I am thankful that he put this together for me, before he left. He found on the pantry shelf this smaller crock pot which would have been a blessing to have for my birthday party...was there all the while but out of sight and out of mind. It works nicely for my dip and am thankful to have my dip kept warm.

Justin also took advantage of a special being offered by Papa Johns Pizza and ordered a pizza for me for dinner. As part of the deal, we get another pizza for free at some point in the future. Nice! Besides my pizza he ordered garlic knots. Oh my goodness, do I love those knots! I ate only one slice of the pizza and filled up on knots with garlic butter. Perfect Super Bowl fare. He ordered it ahead of time, paying online and scheduling the delivery. It arrived right on time and as ordered. I gave the delivery lady an extra tip because I knew she was going to have rough night tonight.

This morning at church, I had fun conversation with a little lady. Jordyn was serving as acolyte and was apprehensive about her job. As she was holding the taper, she asked me if the wick was out far enough. It was hidden from my view by the lectern where I was standing and I told her I couldn't see it. Jokingly I said to her, "I can't even see my feet to know if I am wearing shoes!" She looked down at my feet and with all seriousness said, "You do...." What a little sweetheart she is. And, by the way, she did fine lighting the candles and extinguishing them.

Ladies' Group Brunch

This morning our Ladies' Group from church hosted a brunch, inviting all the ladies from the congregation. Our plan, besides treating them and ourselves to a wonderful hot and cold breakfast, is to stimulate some interest in our group and what we do. Some don't come to our meetings because of not driving at night, others because of work schedules or having kids at home, and other just don't feel like it's the right thing for them. I was one of those when I first moved to FL and was asked to join. What? That's for the old ladies! Talk about preconceived notions about things.
Terri and her friend, OJ, decorated some donated scented candles with pretty ribbons plus Terri put mini candy bars and other favors around on the tables. Don't they look springy and bright?
Our sign-up sheet indicated more would be joining us but we rejoice for those who did come. Terri had just had oral surgery a couple days ago but was a trouper. I was concerned about myself as my back started acting up but it was fine for the day. I managed to carry my egg souffle down to the car plus Justin had gotten up early to make beer cheese muffins for me to take along. I brought home some of my souffle and about a dozen of the muffins. This was his first time making them as muffins instead of loaves, and we decided muffins are the way to go!

Once home, I got myself situated on the bed with the heat pad under me to get my back feeling better. Later I got up and was looking out the doors in the river room when I reached into my pocket, finding something squishy. I pulled out a now melted mini candy bar taken from the table at the brunch. Oh no! I love the dark chocolate and now it was mush. Not to worry, I am sure it will recover nicely in the fridge so I can eat it later!
