Advent photos

Today my friend, Ed, downloaded all the photos taken two months ago at Victory's Ladies' Advent Service. The young lady who was the photographer ran into problems downloading so Ed helped her out. Interestingly, I ran into a similar problem this past week and even had Justin pick up a new card reader for me, before getting my old one to work. Must be something in the air!
Here am I seated next to my table hostess, Erica. At the end of the table is Cathy F. with whom I sat several years ago at another Ladies' Advent Service! I had Diet Coke in my glass while the others had water or tea.
Here is a fuzzy photograph of Lucy H. and me at the table, with Stephanie standing behind me at the coffee center. Lucy just loves "my son" as she always refers to him.
Erica and Stephanie posing together
Friday night Nancy W. had another friend and I over for dinner, and I just loved her placemats and glassware!

I am a menace!

At least my jewelry is...oh, my goodness! I told Linda the other day how I am snagging my new comforter and throw pillows repeatedly with my rings and bracelets. In the three weeks since I've had the comforter on the bed I have already had to use my nail clippers to snip off the longer threads. How sad this is, my nice comforter being shredded every time I move my hands!
I guess if I simply used the laptop which is on my desk this wouldn't happen, but since I am half the time in or on my bed, snagging it is! The clasp on my necklace catches on the pillow used to prop my head up when I incline (or my head goes between the bars on the headboard---not good!). If you recall the time I had my skin tags and beauty marks removed at the doctor, that no matter who tried---me, Justin, the nurse, or the doctor---could not get the clasp open on the necklace. It had too much thread from my pillows wrapped around it, impossible to free it. That is, until I got to the dentist the day after and Yvonne, the dental assistant, would not rest until she got the threads snipped and pulled off. She then cleaned the necklace in the sterilization equipment! Now, I am loading the clasp all up again.

Sleepy tired eyes today

This morning was a rough one, hard to wake up. After a broken up night's sleep, all I wanted to do was sleep some more. But, it was time for Breakfast Club!

The reason my night was such a mess is attributed to a combination of things including a steady rain all night long, my stuffed up head and cough, and probably because of napping during the day. I fell asleep early enough but woke up just in time to see most of Jay Leno's last show. Almost like I planned it that way!

Then, I went back to sleep only to wake up when the electricity went out. Usually when it goes out it comes right back up but not this time. I could hear the elevator 'alarm' beeping which meant it was the entire building, not only me, in the dark. No electricity means no TV, and no TV means no sleeping for me. If I had charged my laptop I'd have been able to listen to "The Big Bang Theory" in my sleep, but alas, it was not charged enough to do the trick.

The power came back up about two hours later, and this allowed me to sleep again until just after 7:00. Short spurts of sleep, which I know some people get by on. I prefer to sleep longer in between waking up, thank you. I set my alarm for 8:00 a.m. which would allow sufficient time for me get ready for breakfast. I had showered the night before so that wouldn't hold me up. And it didn't!

After breakfast I came back home, the rain having finally ended in the earlier morning. My next door neighbors are moving out and I felt badly for them having to drag their stuff through the dirty puddles. Work, or rather, re-work on the sundeck is underway, trying to improve the slope of the tile. More jackhammers and residue, which accumulated in the puddles. Yech!  As a side note: it is most unfortunate that our association paid this contractor a quarter of a million dollars for this job begun in April of last year, and we still have problems with it. I think we should get a refund on the money we paid for 'project management'!

Justin had to work in this mess, which he doesn't like to do. The worst part of working on soggy lawns is that he can't make them look good, leaving ruts and brown grass as he goes. He said he can stamp it down but that doesn't make the grass look better. The guy likes to be proud of his work, and this rain is not helping. It might last into the weekend which does not help for the yards of next week.

At breakfast this a.m. Nancy invited Justin and I to have dinner with her, as she made a jumbo kettle of spaghetti sauce which she needed help eating. I was able to go, but Justin made plans with Jesse and Raymond for dinner. They are going to Whitey's for the half-price appetizers, and I am a bit envious!

I had a very nice time at Nancy's, visiting with her and her neighbor, Jeannie, whom I have met before. She was the lady who I re-met at The Club on a trivia night, and she said, "I could have sworn you were blonde when I met you last summer..." Nope, just the sun having fun with my hair!

Justin to the rescue!

Today at Bible study, besides taking part in a very interesting class, I had the 'job' of taking photos of several people at the request of Judy A. She is putting together a pictorial project for the church or something so had me grabbing folks and photographing them.
Justin and I were on a mission after class, so did not join the group for lunch. Justin's co-worker and friend, Raymond, who is Jesse's brother, experienced a house fire this past weekend. His girlfriend and he 'rent' her grandma's home on Fleming Island. The fire began in the garage, due to a faulty outlet. They were awakened by the sound of aerosol paint cans bursting open from heat. Saved by the paint cans!

Justin and I were going shopping to get Raymond a few things to hold him over, since his clothes and shoes were destroyed in the fire. Most of his stuff was in the garage where the washer and dryer were, and where they left their shoes. I was going to pick up some toiletries and such, trying to imagine what they could use. Temporarily they are staying with her mother but still need the grooming items, etc.

At Happy Hour the night before, I mentioned to Janet and Arnie about Raymond having experienced this fire. They have known him since he was a child which is why I said something. Janet said, "I wish I could help..." and gave Justin some money to use for shopping. Then, this a.m. I got a call at Bible study from another neighbor offering some money as well, having talked with the other two people after we left Happy Hour. He deposited money via pay pal into Justin's account and away we go!

After The Dollar Store stop, we had lunch at Carrabba's which was nearby. With my first bite I dripped juice from my panini on my nice red sweater. Shoot!  It was not horrible but bad enough to embarrass me. We were going to Goodwill next which was okay for having a spot on the sweater. There I got Raymond 5 polo shirts, a pair of slacks, and a belt, for about $30. Not bad!  Justin dropped me at home and went on to Wal-Mart for some more items. Thanks to the generosity of our friends, he was able to get three pairs of shoes for Raymond, underwear, T-shirts, and socks.

When I was at home, I got busy trying to access the church photos on my camera card with no success. The computer sent me error messages saying it did not recognize my card or something. Since Justin was at Wal-Mart, I asked him to pick up a new card reader for me which took some doing because my card is sort of old. At last he found one and brought it home for me. It didn't work either but he figured out what was wrong with my other reader so I got the pictures taken care of. Justin did nothing but rescue people today!

"Hello in There"

            My father-in-law, Arno, in 2008

When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home in an Australian country town, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value.
.
Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, They found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.

One nurse took her copy to Melbourne. The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas editions of magazines around the country and appearing in magazines for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.

And this old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this 'anonymous' poem winging across the Internet.

CRANKY OLD MAN

What do you see nurses? . . .. . .What do you see?
What are you thinking .. . when you're looking at me?
A cranky old man, . . . . . .not very wise,
Uncertain of habit .. . . . . . . .. with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles his food .. . ... . . and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice . .'I do wish you'd try!'
Who seems not to notice . . .the things that you do.
And forever is losing . . . . . .. . . A sock or shoe?
Who, resisting or not . . . ... lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding . . . .The long day to fill?
Is that what you're thinking?. .Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse .you're not looking at me.
I'll tell you who I am . . . . .. As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, .. . . . as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of Ten . .with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters .. . . .. . who love one another
A young boy of Sixteen . . . .. with wings on his feet
Dreaming that soon now . . .. . . a lover he'll meet.
A groom soon at Twenty . . . ..my heart gives a leap.
Remembering, the vows .. .. .that I promised to keep.
At Twenty-Five, now . . . . .I have young of my own.
Who need me to guide . . . And a secure happy home.
A man of Thirty . .. . . . . My young now grown fast,
Bound to each other . . .. With ties that should last.
At Forty, my young sons .. .have grown and are gone,
But my woman is beside me . . to see I don't mourn.
At Fifty, once more, .. ...Babies play 'round my knee,
Again, we know children . . . . My loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me . . . . My wife is now dead.
I look at the future ... . . . . I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing .. . . young of their own.
And I think of the years . . . And the love that I've
known.
I'm now an old man . . . . . . .. and nature is cruel.
It's jest to make old age . . . . . . . look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles .. .. . grace and vigour, depart.
There is now a stone . . . where I once had a heart.
But inside this old carcass . A young man still dwells,
And now and again . . . . . my battered heart swells
I remember the joys . . . . .. . I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living . . . . . . . life over again.
I think of the years, all too few . . .. gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact . . . that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people .. . . . .. . . open and see.
Not a cranky old man .
Look closer . . . . see .. .. . .. .... . ME!!

"Hello in There"

The Trouble With Words

Many years ago I wrote a blog posting about The Importance of Vowels, based upon something my blogging friend, Jami, spoke of  when teaching male convicts how to read and write. I have been recently thinking about conversations she and I had about words. Now it is my turn--only I wish to remove words, or, at least, lessen their usage.

Much of my time is spent listening to podcasters, radio shows, and talking with people. If I am not listening, I am writing. Lately I have found myself simply bristling at the repeated usage of certain words people use, some who should really know better. One word which annoys me in its usage is "right?".  Some people use this word at the end of every declarative sentence, as though the listener should answer, but pressing on without awaiting the response. The same is true with "you know?" used a hundred times in a conversation. These are space savers in conversations or fillers used to grasp the attention or approval of the listener. If you are sure about something, just say it rather than waiting for agreement! I've heard this from podcasters, professional radio personalities, business people, even men of the cloth. Makes my hair stand up!

There are other words which are used with some regularity, most often in church settings. The terminology which is all the rage includes "intentional" or "missional" which make me shake my head. When is something at church not intentional or not missional? Why does have it be almost a doctrine/practice? It feels almost manipulative to use expressions like these to direct the audiences' or congregations' emotions or actions a certain way. I am trying to be diplomatic here, not accusational (ha ha).

Last night one of the shows I watch, a panel program, had a guest host. He is a funny guy, a stand-up comedian, BUT repeatedly uses the expression "stick with me" when it seems the jokes go over the audience heads. He also says his name in a scolding manner, "Jimmy", when he says something outrageous, which bugs the snot out of me. These expressions are props as well. Stop it!

Before I wrote this, I gave much thought to my own language. Was there an expression or word group I use as a prop or a space keeper? I cannot think of anything and surely hope I do not. Certainly my friend who uses "you know?" every few words has no idea they are doing it. Using close-captioning on the TV screen or monitors allows for visual evidence of the repetitive use of those expressions. The auto-captioning catches even pauses which are preferable to "right?".

My new teeth are in!

This morning I had my appointment to set my permanent bridge in place, this process begun last September/early October. At that appointment Peggy removed what was left of my tooth, complete with gold post and put the temporary bridge in place. It held up nicely for me through the holidays though I did have a bit of a problem with getting food caught in it, causing irritation. The bone healed up at last from where the oral surgery was last March and now, my new smooth bridge is in place!

I was concerned about the procedure, since I had come down with a head cold and scratchy throat Monday afternoon, but once in the chair, the symptoms subsided. I suppose lying back with my head down so far prevented the nasty drainage. I told Peggy I feared sneezing and blowing my new teeth across the room against the window! She got just the right shade of grey for my teeth (she scolded me for saying that, stating my color is A1!! Like steak sauce?).
Together we worked and worked to make sure the bite was perfect, but like she said, I can't be sure until I tried eating something. I have gotten used to the resin temporaries so the 'real' ones will take a bit of working in. So far, so good, though one area might still be a bit high. Unless you have been fitted for a crown or a bridge, you might not understand what I am talking about. The last thing I want is to break them off when chewing but she assures me that will not happen. My $1,003,000.85 smile is back!!
To avoid staining the artificial surfaces which many of my teeth have, Peggy suggested drinking my soda through a straw. Or 'rinse in between' with water. What does 'in between' mean? I do drink water during the day so perhaps that's what she meant (I wasn't interested in pursuing this discussion). I told Justin what she said and he had the same look on his face that I am sure I had at that idea. That would be the last straw!!!

Some time later he came tapping at my door, concerned. Justin asked me if I started to drink soda through a straw, will I become a Realtor??? What??? That was one thing he noticed when working with his father, in close association with site agents and other Realtors, female ones. They drink their soda through a straw, so as not to mess up their lipstick. I assured him I would not but I would continue to pray to the Lord about the real estate market!
